ISBN: N/A

The serial murderer, newspapers call the Bicycle Chain Strangler, claims its ninth victim. This time the victim holds in their hand a paper bag with a pickle inside; changing his mode of operation. Baffled, Detective Jack Carter interviews a bum at the scene who has a pickle inside a bag too; claiming a woman gave it to him who said the pickle’s his friend.
The next afternoon Jack scrutinizes a map showing the killer’s strike locations although is distracted when his secretary, Vicky Peik enters the room. Jack considers how long he’s been without a woman. Three years when his wife withdrew all affections, after her miscarriage, which eventually led to divorce. He’s worked with Vicky two of those years. Coming up along side Jack, she tempts him by standing too close, allowing her cinnamon perfume to tease his nose, making other body parts take notice too. Sending her on an errand he studiously watches the sashay in Vicky’s walk; making him more wanton.
Later that night victim number ten is found in a VA housing project; the killer’s definitely targeting war veterans. Setting this victim apart from the others, are his mob connections. As Jack begins to scribble notes he detects a familiar cinnamon aroma in the air – like Vicky’s perfume. Back at the station Jack rummages through her desk; fondling her silk stocking has him imagining things that are not related to the case. However, other clues in her desk reveal something far more disturbing.
Set during the late 1940’s, The Pickle My Little Friend, published by Wild Rose Press, authentically depicts the era’s unique dialog and investigative tactics, giving it a “Sam Spade” feel. The plot is smooth though moves rapidly. Mr. Trevane and Ms. Casey develop convincing characters who are also intense and vibrant. Jack Carter is tough though needy as he fantasizes about his secretary. Vicky, in her brief appearances, is alluring as she “struts” around the office in form fitting dresses, or her apartment in a sexy negligee. I’ll be passing this short story’s name on to my mystery-reading friends, while waiting for this dynamic team to pen another great mystery.
