Toshi has come to Hawaii for a vacation, and he is also hoping to find himself, or that part of himself he has to deny in his everyday life. For Toshi, in the strict culture of his society, there is not a lot of room for him to express himself, as he would like. Being gay is not necessarily accepted, tolerated maybe. But then in the freedom of Waikiki, on a Christmas Holiday vacation, he decides this is to be the time, and the place to join the ranks of those like him. To celebrate his own coming out as it were, and to realize exactly who he is, and come to terms with how he feels about being gay is his goal. To that end, he goes to Queen’s Surf, a well-known spot where those of alternate lifestyles congregate. There, he is welcomed into the fold, almost being dragged there by the friendly men he finds, and soon accepted as one of them. He finds them an accepting group, urging him on, and taking him along for the experiences of his life. Never has Toshi been so easily brought in to a group, so readily made a part of an extended family of like-minded and oriented souls.
However, even with Darin and Mark’s teasing, and the easy camaraderie of the other men at the small beach, there is something missing, and it could possibly be found in the International Market Place on Kalakaua, the main thoroughfare of Waikiki, the park where the performance artists ply their trade. There, in the guise of a Rodin sculpture, Toshi notices a stunning young man, and yet at the time he hesitates and is reluctant to approach or show any interest. There is, however, a tingling feeling when he looks at the one who may be willing to come and play. Signs are present the artist is aroused by those about him. Subtle signals in his body tell Toshi the odd touches he receives excite him in more ways than one. Toshi wonders of he can arouse him too.
When Kristopher shows up at the beach, Toshi is stunned. Goaded and urged by his newly found friends, he gathers his courage, and goes down to meet the man of his dreams. There are new things to do, feelings to be discovered, games to be played, and in Kristopher, Toshi has found a willing participant. What becomes of the meeting? Well, if there is anything to a relationship between Toshi and Kristopher, you can find out when you get this excellent Torquere Press Single Shot, Mahape a ale Wala'au by Paul G. Bens.
