Raised amid the stanch Victorian propriety of the 1800’s, Cassandra Rollins assists the inebriated Viscount Winterton to his room. A long time friend to her brother, Timothy, the two men imbibed a bit too much brandy. Helping Ross ready for bed boosts her private longings for the man. His asking for a simple kiss stirs up decades old fantasies, enough that she freely gives away her virginity.
In an alcohol-induced haze, Ross Benson just wants to taste her lips. Knowing her since a child, he envisioned she would grow into a beautiful woman. Ross was not wrong, as combined with her flowery smell and shear gauzy nightgown proves too much temptation to fend off. The next morning he remembers deflowering his best friend’s sister, but fears admitting that to Timothy. As a highborn gentleman he will do what is right – marry Cassie.

However, as the marriage begins their harmony is evident, based strongly on intellect and lofty attraction. Adjusting to their new status requires patience and time, while learning to negotiate compromises with easy decorum. Cassie despises the social of whirl of London’s “ton”, but relents because it pleases her husband. Ross, aware of his wife’s preference for books and gardens, experiences a foreign jealousy as he closely watches her dance with other men. Clearly, the bedroom will not be subject to cold unions and unspoken affection. Their wedding night yields to sweet lovemaking that gets spicy as the night evolves. Ross teaches Cassie the fine art of loving, making her peak many times. Yet, his heighten lust surprises him, craving her touch, even her mere presence, as the pull of love grows within him.
Ms. Wildes sprinkles in some suspense when an old enemy wishes to destroy Ross’ happiness. Randolph Babcock wants revenge against the rake who initiated an affair with his young wife. Ross’s escape to Africa before he demands a duel incites Randolph’s anger to murderous heights. With his wife suitably subdued, beatings have that affect on women, he now proceeds to make the man pay for that indiscretion. Ross’ wife is enticing compensation to who ever successfully extinguishes the Viscount; the hired gunman can do what he pleases with Cassie once the mission is complete. Only this act will adequately satisfy Randolph’s revenge.
