Being on the good side of one’s boss is usually a desirable position. However, this time being on the bad side of the boss brings unexpected blessings. So it is when Robert Haskins is banished to the country. Here he finds a kind of peace, and a gem of a farm on the outskirts of the small town. Having only the weekend to move in is not necessarily fun, but he is certain he can manage to get most things done before it is back to work on Monday. This night, his dreams are erotically enhanced by a very handsome ghost who is intent on giving him more pleasure than he has known in a long time. The next day, thinking all had to be a dream, Robert begins to get his new home in order. It is when he is considering his remodeling options, and about painting the master bedroom’s surprisingly roomy closet, he gets quite a surprise. As he looks through the things left there, and begins to clean it out he finds the old newspapers and the articles. As he reads through the papers, he is shocked to recognize the face of his “ghost” from his dream encounter night before. This leads him to wonder about the man, about why he is haunting him, and a host of other questions to which he may never know the answers.
Joe Sanders is a small town cop, and he is an oddity. In the country, one doesn’t find too may homosexuals due to little if any tolerance, an abundance of prejudice, and downright hostility of the community. Joe is different, not only because he is a hometown boy, but it goes to his strength, persistence, and training in his field for he is also gay. It helps his acceptance to be a long time resident of the area. His family ties go way back, but there is darkness here as well. His great uncle Daniel was thought to have been murdered by his lover, and that man hanged. It was a dark time, hard for the family to reconcile facts with the fictions written. The stain was still a sore spot on the family history, a mystery never solved. It didn’t help matters when it became obvious Joe was gay, and it was harder still when he wanted to be a cop. He knew he would have to be better, harder, stronger, and more accomplished to achieve his goal, but he made it. Now he is faced with a stranger named Robert Haskins, and he is telling an even stranger tale. But with the telling, a chill slither’s down Joes back…
Here is another example of Jude Mason at her very best. Give her two handsome men, a mysterious disappearance, and she will tell you a tale of love, jealousy, hatred, and revenge all wrapped up with a shiny bow and glittery paper. Ghost of a Chance is not any different. Once again, Jude brought a pair of lovers together under circumstances more than just strange. Robert is exiled from his company after an incident at a party he really didn’t want to attend. Now, faced with the peace of a small town, and finding the exile to his liking, he also discovers a mystery via some very explicitly erotic dreams. Discovering the impetus behind his ghostly visitor leads him to the local constable, and a resident hunk if he can say so himself. Finding Joe ready and willing to listen, Robert pours out the story, and finds he has more in common with Joe than either would have guessed. As the weekend come to a close, there are things to be done, and as the men tackle them together, they find they really want there to be more between them. Will Robert and Joe solve the mystery and come to terms with their attraction? Or will small town prejudice, and the 40 year-old murder, spoil their chance at happiness?
