Egyptian Shifters 1: Turquoise Eye of Horus
Author: Marisa Chenery
Release Date: January 29, 2009
It is the trip of a lifetime, a trip of her dreams, yet totally unexpected things can happen, and one must be prepared. For Codie Marks, however, being lost in the Egyptian desert was not one of them. She was not certain how it happened, one moment she was there with the tour group, the next, she was on her own. The odd sandstorm was bad enough, but how the others disappeared so quickly was a mystery. At this point Codie knows only one thing...she has to find shelter, and if possible food and water until someone comes for her. She might have enough water for a day or two, if she is careful, but not much longer. Although she wasn't planning on getting lost, she did bring some extra water and that had to be a plus, now all she needed was shade. Finding a shrub was not easy, and even though she knew she should stay put, the sun would kill her for certain if she didn't find some shade, no matter how meager. The thought of the necklace she wore around her neck gave her the fanciful idea to ask Hourus to help her, send her a rescue party. The heirloom was called The Eye of Horus, and was given to her by her grandmother. Odd that she would be stuck, lost in the Wadi el Gemal National Park, in the Eastern Desert of Egypt with only her backpack, two bottles of water, a sleeping bag, and her grandmother's necklace....
He didn't think much about his looks. They might have been a novelty at one time, the straight black hair, sculpted features, hard, tall, body built for pleasure drew the women by the score, but that was not on his mind as Horus studied the woman in front of him. She was tall for a woman, but that was nothing to his well over six-foot frame. She would fit him like a glove, and the very intriguing thoughts on her mind made him chuckle. She had called him, whether she meant to or not, whether she believed or not, and he had come to her. The only question was why. Usually mortals didn't call him unless they needed urgent assistance, they needed to supply him with the necessary information. In this case, he was a bit surprised at the need and the carnal thoughts running around in the woman's head. Horus sensed there had to be something more because she wore his pendant, his Eye around her neck. The heat they generated between them, however, was not enough to warm her. She slipped away from him, and the dream, but he saw the fear in her eyes. He concentrated on his Eye, and found her shivering and alone in the desert. He sensed danger, but until he learned more, he could do nothing....
The battles of the Ancients rocked the world, and still, some raged on. Such was the battle between good and evil, between the gods of light and those of darkness. Not all darkness was evil, but in Seth's case, it was true. It was much to his delight when he found the woman, and stranded her in the desert for Horus to find. It would thrill him to see Horus try to save the woman, but with the spells Seth used, his attempts would be futile. it was Seth's darkness to Horus' light, and this time, Horus would lose. Seth was cagey, and he knew just which buttons to push. Over the years he had studied his nephew, and was determined to bring him down as he did Horus' father, Osiris.
From the pen of Marisa Chenery, a most talented writer, comes a series of stories dealing with the ancient gods of Egypt. The Eye of Horus is the first of these sexy shorts, and deserves a place in your very own Pantheon of Honour. Horus has been whiling away the eons like most of the ancient gods, forgotten for the most part, and socializing when they could. Not many called on them for help, guidance, or worshippped them anymore, but they hadn't forgotten, and kept an eye on the humans from afar. Now there is something wrong, and Mother Nature decides it is time for a change in the status quo, and makes her demands. She has decreed it so now is the time when the gods will meet their mates. Horus is the first to fall, and it is not an easy road to love, even for a god. The mortal chosen for him is one he will not be able to resist, and the path to true love for them will not be smooth. Each has obstacles to overcome, danger to face, and some hard realities to acknowledge. Only then will the pair find the happiness meant just for them. If you want to see how this all comes about for Horus and Codie, please head on over to Siren Publishing and their Bookstrand Store and get your copy of The Eye of Horus today.

For bookstore owner, Jinny Hunter, nothing was exactly as it seemed She had a few friends, a struggling business, but all in all she survived. She had dreams of love, but it just didn't seem to be in the cards for her. Oh she still hoped, but she realized she just didn't have a lot of time till she got things off the ground. She has a good location, near two universities and a museum, so business was often a steady trickle. She was grateful for what she had, but wanted a bit more success. She wanted to be able not to worry constantly about her rent, her food, her stock, and enjoy the fruits of her labours. That would come in time, meanwhile she has some decisions to make, a promotion to get ready for, and books to return to shelves. The new window display is satisfactory, and she hopes it will draw more customers. Nepha, an older Egyptian woman who was a regular visitor, and a friend, was coming tomorrow, and bringing her cards to read fortunes for those who come into her bookstore. Jinny figures it will do business some good, and even if they don't buy anything tomorrow after their reading, maybe they will come back later. What Jinny wasn't expecting was Nepha to tell her fortune, to draw the card of Anubis, God of the Dead and Judgment, and to die...
No fear. Wonder, and confusion emanated from her as she took in the heiroglyphs on the walls of her new surroundings. Curiosity was very evident in the woman's face, but there was no fear. Most of those who came to his Hall of Judgment feared him, no matter how fair the judgment. She did not seem to, however, and Anubis wondered why. Not only does she not fear him, but she seems attracted to him, even in his jackel-headed form. She intrigues Anubis by her very presence, her lack of fear, her boldness, her attraction is all new to him, all unusual to say the least. It was not usual for humans to show such bravery around him, and he wondered who she was and why she was there. For it to be time for her judgment didn't seem right, there was something off in this scenario, so Anubis decided some questions were in order. But he was not expecting her bold statement of denial, of her assertation that he was not real and she was not dead. She was feisty, tiny, and the longer she stood there defiant in her disbelief, the tighter his attention became focused on her. She was odd to say the least, and even demanded to be sent back to the realm of the living. Well Anubis decided, if it were truly up to him, and if it were totally possible, he would keep her for himself, but things didn't work that way, and he had to let her go, one way or another...
For Jinny, life sucks and if this is death, it might not be so bad. She has watched Anubis judging the sould who come before him, and it doesn't frighten her. It is apart of who he is, and Jinny finds herself attracted to the whole package. But she doesn't want to be dead, and she doesn't want to remain in limbo, and can only hope Anubis will let her go back to where she belongs. There is only one problem, and that is she seems to be getting weaker and weaker. That truly frightens her. Anubis realizes there is only one thing he can do, and as much as it hurts him, he can do nothing but let her go. Egyptian Shifters 3: Sef, the Lion of Yesterday
Author: Marisa Chenery
Release Date: February 12, 2009
The last thing Chandra Marshall expected to have as a guest in her rescue shelter was a lion. But then according to everything she could find out, this was also a very special lion as well, for it was rare, and no longer found in the wild. The Barbary lion was a beautiful creature, with it's dual-tone, curled mane and huge size. Chandra couldn't help but wonder where it came from, and how it got to the middle of a field in rural Ontario without anyone being any the wiser. They were desert beasts, and were rarely found, if at all, outside of zoos. They were thought to be extinct in the wild, and definitely not native to Canada, so the mystery surrounding this one was even greater. Adding to that was his unusually cool temperment, the apparent friendliness of the beast, all six hundred pounds of him actually purred at her, licked at her, and followed her like a puppy. Even more unsettling was finding herself giving in to his demands to stay by her side. What Chandra was not prepared for was the sight of the lion morphing into a man of almost seven feet in height, and with hair the colour of the sun, skin like bronze, and eyes that flashed like gold coins. The low slung pleated linen kilt that hugged slim hips, and a physique that made her mouth water only made this perfect man seem like a dream...
Duau, his twin, was no where in sight. He could not contact him in their accustomed manner, and it worried Sef. He was alone, in an unknown place but with someone who was willing to care for his lion. It was also very odd that he found himself in the mortal realm with this mortal woman who, if his senses were correct, was his destined mate. He was quite certain the demon did not mean this as the outcome, yet it was undeniably true. The woman, Chandra, was definitely his mate. Everything about her was right, her smell, her looks, her caring personality all these pointed to the mate promised by destiny. After her initial hesitation, and his convincing her he meant no harm, he followed her closely. Why now, Sef didn't know, but he knew danger was still stalking him, and the Demon Leader wouldn't easily give up. They wanted access to the underworld, and would not stop until they got what they wanted or were defeated. As the God Aker, Sef was one of the Guardian Lions, and it was his job, along with Duau his twin brother, to keep the gates of Ra safe. He was but one half of the Gate Keeper, the demon's spell having thrown him far from his brother, and it worried him that the gates might now be vulnerable to demon attack...
The man had it going for him, Chandra was not a small woman, but Sef towered over her. As she went through her day, she realized one thing, if Sef was truly an Egyptian God, then she would lose him, and that made her more determined to enjoy every minute with him while she could. On Sef's part, he hated the thought of being parted from his mate, but that was a small sacrifice to make when the future continuity and safety of the Underworld depended on him doing his job. As always, Marisa Chenery has taken us into uncharted territory, and thrown us curves we can't possibly expect. The tale is intriguing, the characters strong and engaging. This is one of the hallmarks of Marisa Chenery book, and Sef, The Lion of Yesterday is no exception. You can find his story at Siren Publishing, along with the previous two books in the series. There is one more coming that I am aware of, and I am truly looking forward to its arrival. Stop by Siren's Bookstrand store and get your copies of the Egyptian Shifters, Scions of Ankh today.

Duau, The Lion of Tomorrow
Author: Marisa Chenery
Release Date: February 19, 2009
Art is what Darcie Clark lives for, to paint, to see, to enjoy. She finds beauty in the world around her, and for this reason, after she divorced her ingrate of a husband, she moved to Muskoka, and to a beautiful home on a lake in the cottage country there. Yes, the winters were a bit harsh, but the beauty of spring, the fullness of summer, and the blush of autumn more than made up for it in her painter's eye. The beauty of the day caught at her, and she went out to her deck, determined to paint outdoors. Clear skies, beautiful sunshine, and the warmth promised by the rising sun drew her like nothing else. She knew her days were numbered outside, for colour tinged the leaves, harbingers of the riot of colours to come with the first real frosts. Wisps of fog rise off the lake, and the stillness of the morning brings Darcie peace. This is what she needs, this is what her ex-husband was unwilling to give her, or allow her to have.
She is reminded of all the crap she left behind, the abuse, the demands, and the unreasonable belief that her painting was not truly work, but just a silly hobby. This is her freedom from all that she left behind, and Darcie revels in the thought and in the ever-changing beauty of her surroundings. When her peaceful cup of tea is disturbed by an unusual noise that just didn't fit into her surroundings, Darcie looked around to see what happened. She set her tea cup down, then carefully moved to the stairs. Cautiously she left the deck, rounding the house in search of the odd disruption. As she followed the noises, they appeared to be grunts from some kind of animal, and maybe even one that was hurt. She should know better, but she was floored when she saw the troubled creature. Where in the world had that lion come from, and what had happened? The crack of a dry branch gave her away, and when the lion turned his amber-eyed gaze on her, all she could do was turn and run, hoping it wouldn't or couldn't follow her...
Pain radiated through him, panic almost set in, but he was in the mortal world, and Sef was not anywhere to be seen. Worry heightened when he could not contact his brother, they had always been able to maintain contact before. As siblings, twins, and reigning together as the God Aker. Duau and Sef had never been parted. Sef guarded the gate of yesterday, the gate used by Ra when he entered the Underworld. Duau guarded the other, the gate heralding the new day to come. Duau's Egyptian name meant "Tomorrow," Sef's meant "Yesterday," and together they were the guardians of the past and the future. The demons who wanted control of the gates had been beaten for now, but the leader's spell was strong, and Duau found himself in this mortal world, hurt, alone, and then there was the woman. It took all his strength, but he went after her, caught her, and before he passed out, managed to plant the compulsion in her mind to care for him, protect him, shelter him. There was also something else that assured him of his quick recovery. He now had hope, because his lion's sense of smell was not weakened, even though his body was, and that sense told him the woman was his mate. That was not expected, but it gave Duau more hope, a reason to want her protected, and the determination to regain his strength so he could shift as quickly as possible.
Twin Gods, separated by a vengeful demon, are thrust into the mortal realm. Fate and the Gods can be cruel, but in the case of Duau, The Lion of Tomorrow and his brother Sef, The Lion of Yesterday, the results are not in the demon's favour. Even though Duau and Sef have lost contact, Duau feels certain he is all right. Even without the mental connection, he feels if something were dreadfully wrong, he would still know. But while the continued silence in his head bothers him, the fullness in his heart does not. Darcie is everything Duau could want in a mate, she is beautiful, talented, loving, and although mortal, she is willing to love him while she can. Until Duau finds a way home to the Underworld, and until he can ask Ra for Darcie to join the ranks of the immortals, he must deal with her very human and mortal world. When danger and death threaten the one he loves, then and only then will Duau fulfill the destiny set in motion by the Fates. Marisa Chenery has dealt the world a beautiful and winning hand when she decided to take up her pen. Her stories are rich, full of character, love, and an unmistakably sensual aura surrounds the whole body of her work. Never have I been disappointed in a Marisa Chenery read. As with the rest of her book's characters, Duau, The Lion of Tomorrow revels in his sensuality, loves with all his heart, and will go to to any lengths to keep those he loves safe. You can find his story at Siren Publishing, along with the previous books in the series. Stop by Siren's Bookstrand store and get your copies of the Egyptian Shifters, Scions of Ankh today.

To sum up Marisa Chenery's work is not an easy task. She often pulls one out of their comfort zone, then completely wraps them in her character's story, allowing the reader to forget themsleves in the story, and long for more after it is done. I have found this to be the truth on more than one occasion, and am more than willing to tackle one of her books. She allows one to travel through her worlds unhindered, and yet sets the parameters and boundries with a gentle hand.
Yours in good reading,
Rose!
