So you are skeptical, don't believe in ghosts? Detective Jake Gilford didn't either until he met Joss Wheeler, and entered her Haunted House....
The woman who met him at the door was on edge. Beautiful didn't do her justice with her cafe au lait skin, silky ebony curls, and chocolate eyes. She looked good enough to eat, and Jake had to rein himself in, and do it fast. When the Chief sent him on this assignment, he really was expecting a crank call, but if this beauty was crazy, or even a bit cracked, he couldn't see any symptoms. The woman appeared short tempered, stretched thin, bitchy, tense, and any number of things to him, but crazy? Somehow it just didn't fit. Tired he could see in her eyes, and that made anyone cranky. Scared, yup, and she readily admitted it too, which only added to his doubts about her situation. Someone HAD to be behind the problems, and even though a thorough search turned up no immediate clues, Jake is still not convinced. He has seen his share of scams, and Jocelyn Wheeler stood in a position to be a very wealthy woman in spite of the estrangement from her father. She made a very good target, and Jake was very motivated to see whoever was preying on this lovely creature and making her miserable was put away for a long time. Attracted to her was putting it mildly, but he forced himself to remember, this was a jog, and she could be in danger. It was something he had better keep in mind, and was only brought home more strongly when he witnesses for himself the first manifestations of her problems.
Jocelyn Wheeler was scared to stay in the house alone. Silly for a grown woman to feel this way, but there it is, the bald and ugly truth staring her in the face. Of course the next reaction had been anger, but even now that, too, was wearing thin as the extreme noises in the wee hours of the morning were disrupting her sleep, and causing her distress. When Joss had first been contacted, she couldn’t believe what was said, her father wanted to meet her. A father, a man she had never known, and now it is too late. Even after he mother confirmed the facts for her, it was hard to believe after all these years her father wanted to see her. Then life intervened, and the reunion never happened. Now she was here, in Edward Cooper’s house, looking into her past, and discovering the house to be haunted. That was one surprise she could have done without. The house itself was lovely, even with the somewhat bizarre furnishings, the stuffed animals in the living room, and the odd bric-a-brac he had collected over a lifetime of travel. It was an uphill battle with her mom when she left to come to this place to claim the legacy from her father. It was to her greatest sorrow and regret she had not gotten the chance to know him, but she is determined to hang on to what he left her by hook or by crook. After all, it was now HER house, and she didn’t want any one, or anything to be able to drive her away. Not a bunch of ghosts or a skeptical detective will keep her from her new home.
Edge of Sanity by Jamie Hill sets the scene and the story line for what appears to be a very interesting series of short books. Done in chapter series, the first book of three chapters sets the story and introduces you to characters you will not soon forget. Jake is the rough and tumble guy, all male and self assured. The epitome of masculine bravery, he does not believe in ghosts, or anything that goes bump in the night. To him, there is a cause and a reason for everything, and he will get to the bottom of this so-called “ghost nonsense” fast. He is an excellent foil for the more demure but feisty female played by Jocelyn. Between them, the sparks will fly, and as we get further into the story, I am sure they will heat up the pages even more. This first installment was a treasure, and the rest hold true to form. Just so you know, this is a series of shorts you will not want to miss. From the first page to the last, Edge of Sanity, Books 1-5 had me glued to the pages. The first left me with the wants for certain. The list included: I WANT to know why the house is haunted, I WANT to know who is doing the haunting, and I WANT to know how they are doing it as well as when are Jake and Joss really gonna get together, and will her mother forgive her… And the list went on and on… Yup, Jamie had her literary talons in, and I wasn’t satisfied till I got all the answers. SO dear reader, look for these shorts of the five book series today at Freya’s Bower, and join me in solving the haunting that is keeping Jake and Joss on the Edge of Sanity!
Yours in good reading,
Rose!
