Alana has come to New Orleans in search of her brother. He was researching an unusual blood disorder when he disappeared, and Alana has followed his trail here. Little does she know what she will find at the end of her search, but she has a solid lead, and will do what she can to follow it through. Her goal is to find her beloved brother, and she is determined. She doesn't expect to find monsters, but for some reason, that is exactly what she has found, and still no sign of her brother. There have been promises made, but now she faces death. She is not afraid, disappointed yes, but not afraid. There is some sense of protection, yet she is unprepared for the tall, pale stranger who steps into her world, takes out the only two who may know her brother's whereabouts, and promises her he will assist her in finding Edward. She feels safe in his presence, her heart speaks a name and seems to know this man. There is trust there, and she has no idea why. It remains to be seen if he is Alana's savior or her destruction. Something tells her there is safety within Amon's arms...
I have to tell you right off that this book is wonderfully wrought. For those of you who are fans of Susan Squires' Companion Series, stand and cheer. Kimberly Adkins takes a similar and unusual tack with her novella, Blood Evolution, and allows the reader to go on a ride that spans the ages. Told through snatches of journal entries interspersed with the contemporary action, she has crafted a tale of ancient wrong, and lovers torn asunder in a previous life, only finding themselves faced again with a battle of life and death. What passed for a religion before has morphed into an evil that is insidious in nature, and far from the religion it once was. Now it is up to Amon and Alana to stop the spread and to save her brother before he is sacrificed to the God. Blood Evolution is scheduled to be released on Tuesday, July 13th, 2010, so keep an eye on Siren Publishing and/or BookStrand's bookstore for this terriffic read. It is unusual, delightfully written, and a total feast for those who look for a different kind of vampire story. Blood Evolution by Kimberly Adkins does not disappoint!
