Kate Hunter wishes to forget the dreadful divorce she just endured. She decides to go and visit her good friend, Rosa in Colorado. After she sends an email telling Rosa she needs a break, she sets out for Colorado. On the way her mind begins to have strange feelings as she gets a peculiar feeling that something is amiss with Rosa. Out of the blue she experiences a bizarre telepathic connection with huge warning indicators. A man she has never met informs her to barricade a wall inside her head for safety. In just a few seconds, Kate is signaled that wickedness loiters at her best friend’s home.

Kate arrives to find something truly is amiss when she learns that Rosa is missing. Son, Tommy has no whereabouts of his mother, so Kate decides to stay and care for him, not really trusting Grant, Rosa’s husband. She wouldn’t put him past doing something to Rosa and she intends to do her own exploring for answers. After Eric enters the picture, she is torn for her desires for him as well as for her telepathic lover who appears to have captured her heart and still strongly warns her to be careful of all lurking evil.

Eric Mason has a ranch that borders Grant’s land and visits Rosa’s house quite frequently. He and Tommy have a friendship and he loves visiting the boy. Unfortunately he holds no respect for Grant. He has a strange feeling that Grant could possibly hurt Rosa and Tommy. After he has the pleasure of meeting Kate, he is certain she is the one he has been searching his entire life. He knew there was one person out there for him but never could make any connection until her presence grew closer.

Eric knows there is something dark and mysterious that lurks nearby and it lives on the ranch joining his. He doesn’t trust his cousin, Grant and he knows there is only one person that can help and she is on her way. When Kate arrives, he is sure she is the one that he has been dreaming of his whole life. He will do everything in his power to keep her with him as they delve into the lives of Grant and his housekeeper to learn who is behind the mysterious disappearance of Tommy’s mother, Rosa. Accidents continue to mount but with Kate’s help and love, things change swiftly for Eric and Kate.

Kate did not expect to be warned by a physic that her best friend, Rose was in grave danger as she departs to Colorado. She feels a connection with the man as he delivers the message. She has never met him so wonders why she senses such an unsettling link. When she arrives in Colorado she is surprised to find her best friend not there. Rosa would never have run off and leave her five-year-old son and she knew Kate was coming and Rosa was not the type to leave suddenly. Now the big issue is why and who is liable for her absence. There is so much that Kate encounters when she discovers a possible ghost in the attic and a list of suspects including Eric, the neighbor, or even her friends husband, Grant, could have been accountable. And one person she refuses to omit is the unexplained man she met through the physic bond who alleges he has been expecting her arrival.

There is only one thing left to do and that is locating Rosa, and Kate intends to not go anywhere until she completes her search. She keeps her mind focused on everything good especially when the voice tells her it would be unwise to communicate once she arrives. Kate continues to feel a strong presence that is dark and gloomy. The housekeeper Mrs. Latham doesn’t help matters making Kate feel like a complete outsider and also one who never cared for Rosa. The telepathic voice utters her never to use any communication once she arrives except for dire emergencies, so now Kate finds herself almost alone in a household that seems to carry many secrets as accidents begin to not only befall her but Tommy, too. She doesn’t understand why Tommy loves Eric but is frightened of Grant. When Grant refuses to call in the FBI or the State Police and she is injured in an accident she fights everything within herself to locate her telepathic person hoping that he will come to the rescue before more serious accidents happen.

With An Open Mind is a sweet story with a touch of romance. The story surrounds characters that are downright evil, with even a few shadows of darkness while a hero and a heroine must come to the rescue. With a wicked protagonist the story unfolds as evil tries to conquer good but in the end, everyone knows good wins over evil. The story entails a ghost-like appearance in the attic as if doom was constantly circling the family. It is a story that is quite entertaining and Kate and Eric are a wonderful couple that brings joy to the book.

Ms. Huxman spins some suspense with a few mixed in ghosts, creepy gloomy shadows, along with Tommy and his secret friend, Ching-chung to pen an entertaining read. She generates likeable characters that keep the reader abreast with the story. This is a refreshing tale mixed with romance, suspense, a bit of paranormal and eerie feelings to make a wonderful read.
