Nera Bannoch is a woman who thinks she is dreaming another life of pure fantasy, yet the emotions she feels are so real to her she sees her reality must be the truth - she hears her name being mentioned, and other people around her who must also be real, yet her mind is such that all these emotions go toward making her fragile in real life. At any given moment she can awake one day and sense that it had all been a dream even if everything seemed so real. Is she the woman in the dream the Romans know is coming, and known as the Nephilim, or is she someone else? Another terrifying aspect of the dreams she receives are the wounds she gets – they are in reality!
Occasionally stuck in her peculiar surroundings Nera can be anyone in her dreams, a criminal escaping from a medieval dungeon, a woman of importance trying to keep out of the way of Roman soldiers, and in others too awful to mention she is always a character whose feelings are unmistakably real to her once she wakes. In reality she has problems of her own, wanting to stay in the house she grew up in and enjoy the a place before finally selling up and going off on her own in the world - she would like nothing more than to get with a suitable man to raise her own children, but her opportunity has ceased to come. Nera is confused at dying several times in her dreams, and has no clue as to the significance, but with Athan’s help she will come round to his way of thinking. What she might not expect is falling in love with him.
Athan is the only one she confesses she has these dreams to; he takes care of her wound and helps her find sanity through all her difficulties. He is a strong and serious man who is capable of bringing her out of her dreams and the hurt she senses from them, a logical type prone to analysing everything she says and that can annoy her at times even though he notices she is growing fond of him. Athan knew her father for a number of years and he and she are very much alike in terms of her dreams. When she tells him about them, he doesn't treat her as though she is insane, he just listens to her talking about Romans, wounds and the camp she was in, plus the name she was called in a far off land. He is a caring man who can get irritated when he wants to, yet he has a certain manner with her that helps in a way at first she can’t take in.
His time with Nera has not been wasted for Athan when he finds how life for her is so complicated. He is drawn to her as she is to him, yet he seems to know more than he should about her and the problems arise when he tells her more of his life and the reason he has decided to see her. He knows others may come to cause her a great deal of pain due to who she actually is, and he is prepared to help and protect her from this imminent danger. He does require her to understand his need for urgency though as the time he takes to talk to her is wasting valuable escape time.
In this novel the principal character, Nera is propelled into an ancient setting where Roman soldiers dash around their camp, and life and death mingle with alarming regularity. The fact that she seems trapped between her sleeping and waking life with each of these instances seeming as realistic as they possibly can, could drive her insane, yet she is made of much stronger stuff than even she considers. Luna Carrol has written a wonderful piece of fiction set in two timelines even though one is in dreams and the other is what she considers her reality. If she wants to get to the bottom of what she feels she must trust in her heart as far as Athan is concerned, and listen to what he has to say. Whatever happens, he does believe in her and her reasons for acting so strange. If she trusts him, what she dreams will become a reality, and she can use her knowledge of this era to her advantage in order to become the woman she was destined to be.
Luna Carrol's work starts out as deep and evocative to the point of creating a whole new fantastic universe for readers to get into. Every emotion is there in great detail, and those who read this novel will do so with a mixture of awe and wonder. Time and Again is a trip back in time the reader will never regret as it has all the danger, atmosphere and sensuality you can cope with. As a novel it would be recommended to readers who like to wait a while for the sensuality to simmer as this is a nice tease part of the way through, yet Luna manages to still keep the reader interested in the plot, story and dialogue.
