A magical barrier protects earth from the alternate reality that can open the globe to contemptible horrors that extend to hundreds of years prior, a magical barrier known as the Veil. Another force wishes to put a stop to the Veil by ripping holes in the fabric of its source. This vile evil is known as the Black Hole Killer and will stop at nothing to end its existence. The Black Hole Killer kidnaps and often kills non-mortals then rips holes in the fabric of the Veil. The Black Hole Killer has been operating in the city less than a month, and now six are missing and twelve dead. It is the worse serial/killer that Detective Devon Harrigan has seen in the five centuries of his work. To make matters worse no identity mark is left if a body is found, and even if a body is uncovered, it is only left with unidentifiable charred bits and pieces.
Detective Devon Harrigan, a five-hundred-year old vampire and New Denver Extranormal Investigations Unit lead on the case, can often witness the scene of a crime, get a riff of the smell of bloody, gory death then have his fangs ache and his mouth salivate. Now into the twenty-seventh century earth he searches for the serial criminal known as The Black Hole. He is the absolute best investigator the New Denver City PD has ever had. When his chief tells him that the leadership of the Magi Aedius Quentin has the woman as his protégé and without her the veil will fall and the world could fall into some chaos resembling what killed the world off five hundred years ago, Devon believes the nonsense hocus pocus comparing it to a grandmother telling the children to keep their hands out of the cookie jar. Or like some silly magic happening in the air. But when the chief informs it will be left to him to protect the high highness, Devon is not looking forward to being a baby sister to the silly nonsense.
Devon is not too happy when he hears he must safeguard Lady Helene, the woman that holds a special attachment to the veil. He finds her selfish and stuck on herself, but her ethereal beauty is enough to almost make him stop in his tracks. And she is the most stunning creature he has ever seen. Still he is required to safeguard her. He quickly learns that she is a woman that is given the charge of being the liberator of the world. She is also known as the keeper of the veil. Devon and her lifestyle are completely different from each other. With incongruent backgrounds they must find a way to prevail over their differences to protect the veil. They work together to keep the veil from all destruction as each day the sensations felt inside them bring on a surprisingly different love neither imagined.
Lady Helene DuSolaire is considered to be an invaluable asset to her people, and humanity in general, but after an attack is made on her life, she finds herself a victim when The Black Hole strikes again. If it had not been for her strength she might have been destroyed and all her training by the Maitri, the Mage of the highest order and ruler over the Veil would have been lost. Now with an attack played on her life, she has been turned over to a bodyguard, one that in time really begins to send her tantalizing sensations, but she knows that it is not in the cards for her to indulge in any sexual relations.
Helene knows that Detective Harrigan is quite different from the other vampires that she has met but she still must be kept under his protection. She is not too keen on the way he handles things but when someone is out to destroy her very existence, she has no choice in whose hands she is placed if they wish to find who is behind all the killings. She can only hope the time she spends with him won’t be too long since he is entirely not her type; then again sometimes looks can be deceiving.
In time Devon learns that Lady Helene is not a pampered or treasured princess like he expected. The more he learns about her he soon discovers she is a loving, caring soul and most giving. It has been centuries since Devon held such strong feelings about any woman and now for reasons unknown, she strikes a fancy in him that he was certain he would never feel. But the love that has captured him spins him into a whole new world. Helene knows about the world beyond and realizes it is her duty to understand the delicate powers of light and dark that her powers help to uphold. Never had she interacted with any vampire like Devon until she is forced to spend time with him. His rudeness, bad-temperament and improper attire is enough to send her head spinning. He likes the taste of meat and she highly dislikes it, never eating it. They both are like hot and cold water so different from the other. Then why does she feel such a strong passion toward him? That is a good question that continues to provoke her to no end. As they begin to trek into the happenings with the Veil, they find they have an attraction for the other. They both fight the desirability that continues to grow between them as they search for the real person behind the killings and attacks. Helene has already been targeted once, and until the killer is caught, her life falls into jeopardy every minute. The answer all lies within the Veil, the only thing that keeps the darker side out but someone most powerful is determined to rip it open and emit a great deal of damage. Devon has to pull all stops before things grow worse then they already are but after a catastrophe occurs that points to Helene, Devon isn’t sure if what he sees is real, or if someone wishes for him to think Helene is the real evil behind the mask. Time it running out with Helene caught in the middle either way they look.
The Veil is an action packed read that spins with wonderful creativity. Helene and Devon are very interesting characters and quite the opposites and that’s what makes this story believable and such a page-turner. They are almost at each other’s throats then practically in each other’s arms as they continue to fight the steering passion for the other. Their differences are just as strong as the love they experience. Devon has a side to him that at times shows some venerability while being committed to his job and when he desires something nothing stops his passion. The fight for the good to over stamp out evil is well-written and filled with that edge of the seat excitement. It is a most excellent blend of flavors that indeed captivates. Helene and Devon are incredibly sexy together.
