Emma Sarris learns that her adopted father, the Mayor of Paradise has business with a man that one look causes her heart to drum at an unsteady beat. The only daughter of Mayor Reginald Sarris, she is referred to as ‘my Emma’ when he speaks to her. The Mayor and his wife had a son, William then adopted what they considered the perfect daughter. The Mayor even has scheduled Emma to wed the banker’s son. They may consider a marriage to Calvin, ideal, but she isn’t in love with him, but the man that comes to discuss business with her father, certainly sends excitement through her veins.
Luke Reinhardt is assistant chief of the Southern Pacific Railroad. In his twenty-six years, he has learned much about analysis from some races. The moment he goes to the Mayors home to sign a contract for a railroad through Paradise to Sante Fe, he meets Emma for the first time. She practically takes his breath away with her beauty and grace, when she enters the room. He knows he shouldn’t be thinking of someone who is engaged to another man, but she is just breathtaking.
Emma has one thing left that links her to her parents and that is the silver brooch she was left at the age of three. She is glad the Mayor of Paradise, New Mexico and his wife adopted her, but sometimes what they feel is best in her favor, she doesn’t always agree, especially when it comes to love. At the moment she isn’t sure she is even ready for marriage. She only hopes she can convince the parents who took her into their home will understand if she chooses not to spend the rest of her years with Calvin.
Luke likes to avoid his background. Growing up, prejudice had shown how harsh it could be for a young child. His mother was Chippewa and sometimes that did not favor growing up in a land that didn’t wish to be with someone whose skin was different. He may have favored his father but he still got the snub remarks that people chose to cast. In the aftermath of signing the railroad contracts, he gets to know more about the Mayor’s family. Emma is shocked when she cannot find the brooch. Heartbroken, she runs to her mother who wonders was it just misplaced. Emma assures it wasn’t. It always stays in her jewelry case.
As Luke waits for the Sante Fe stage, he plays some cards with William, where the brooch comes into play. Emma’s mother goes to William inquiring about the brooch, and he finally confesses. When Emma learns who has won her beloved brooch in a card game, she is determined to get the brooch back even if she has to follow Luke to Sante Fe. It doesn’t matter that she is William’s adoptive sister; he had no right to take from her what was left to her from her mother. If Emma has to follow Luke everywhere, she will, until she can reclaim what is legally hers, never anticipating the attraction that would grow between them.
This story is truly awesome. The series with the Celtic brooch continues in Tempted Fate: Legacy of the Celtic Brooch Book III. Each book surrounds the Celtic brooch and is beautifully composed. I simply adored Luke and could share in his emotions, especially when he thought about the prejudice he had to endure growing up with some people who were too selfish to realize the color of one’s skin doesn’t matter. Emma is sweetly sketched as she tries to hold onto what she has left of her family. I could feel her yearnings to get the brooch back. With the linking in of the Celtic brooch, it is like a portal is opening to Luke and Emma, as they feel such a strong attraction to the other.
Karyna DaRosa did a splendid job in sketching sensational characters within this historical western that paints a sky that opens up to a backdrop that transports the reader into the past. I thought the comparison of Emma, as the adopted daughter and being labeled as perfect, and then William as their blood son who has a gambling problem, and odds at with his father, was a nice twist. Honestly, this is one magnificent tale that shouldn’t be missed. Readers will be uplifted into a world that is truly captivating. The Wild Rose Press has a winner with this book.
Sincerely good reading,
Linda
