The boy thrashed in the narrow bunk, and the man could only watch. The illness plaguing the boy was a huge problem, he didn’t know what it was, but he was darned sure going to find out and find a cure. Now as he thought about it, he knew where his loyalties lay, with his family, his brother, and so the resolve remained. Wanted though he is, the pirate can’t leave his brother to suffer like this, the pain excruciating, often leaving Wes tired, weakened, and bloodied. It was not so bad in the past, but time had a way of magnifying things, and Wes was getting to a point where Sinya couldn’t help him, did not know what to do for him, and that hurt him badly. He felt helpless as he watched his brother scream in pain. He and the crew saw the agonies Wes suffered, how even now they are getting worse, and yet no one consulted so far seems to know what the illness is, or how to cure it. Weakened by the constant seizures and convulsions, Wes is slowly going down hill, and not only Sinya is worried. The last bout, the worst any of them have seen to date, has ended in unconsciousness and coma. The whole crew is worried, they are a family of sorts, and each has watched over Wes since Sinya brought him aboard.
Fleeing from the hate and poverty, Sinya made a life for himself. He is now his own master, his destiny is his as is the ship he flies with such great skill. His pirate life, and those of his crewmembers is one of freedom. They control their lives, the ships they plunder, their own little place in the sector. Freeing Wes from the heavy hand of the terrible sickness was now the primary task of Sinya, and his crew supported him completely in the quest. Wes was important to all of them, and at every turn, they have been diligently searching for the means to help the stricken boy. The pirates have finally come to this little solitary world off the beaten track. A tiny non-descript world where they were told they might find a witch who could cure the boy. Here they have found Beulah. And now they also has a name for that which plagues Wes. Now Sinya knows Wes is an empathic, and the powers he has are out of control. There is danger lurking close, and it is embodied in the spirit of the small intruder within Wes’ mind. Now it is a fight for more than Wes’ control. It is a fight that risks all their lives…
Only with strict and careful training will Wes be able to resume a full and active life. Only with Beulah’s help can he reach his full potential. This is a daunting job the young witch is facing, but the Accellis, a race of mystic healers have faith in her, have charged her with the task, so Beulah has to believe the cure is not beyond her powers. The task is probably one of the greatest she has ever faced, but it won’t stop her. There is much at stake here, and the witch knows destiny works with a generous hand. She is not expecting the dark-haired, dark-eyed pirate, or the attraction that pulls her to him. The task is made only harder by the discovery of another presence in the mind of the young empathy. The presence of the young girl can destroy Wes, and yet she is strong enough to thwart Beulah’s every move. She feels safe in Wes’ mind, and no wonder. The force her brother wields is FAR greater than anything Beulah has felt in a very long time. She realizes that here the battle will engage, the opponents will size each other’s strengths.
Beulah knows only that she MUST win the war. More rests on the outcome than just Wes’ life, but that is Sinya’s focus, his priority, and he will do whatever it takes including sacrificing himself for Wes. Beula cannot allow that. She is determined to save both the boy and his brother, and to that end, proceeds to make plans to follow the presence who ripped Wes’ conscious and metaphysical self from his physical being. Only in following Hortra to his stronghold can Beulah confront the evil, and ultimately save Wes. The depths of Hortra’s evil cannot be allowed to survive, and the Acellis healers cannot help either her or Wes anymore till he is defeated. Only with the help of Sinya and his loyal crew can Beulah begin the journey, and only with the Overlord’s protection can she arrive at her goal. She needs all the help she can get, but the journey will hold a multitude of surprises for her and for Sinya. The obstacles they face are terrible, but they have to succeed. More depends on her than Wes’ life which now hangs in the balance….
Angela Verdenius Strikes Again! Soul Of A Witch is the newest addition to the Heart and Soul series. Here again, Angela continues her fantastically entertaining tales with Beulah the Witch, whom we have met in several previous books. Finally, we get to find out the truth behind Beulah, her talents, her beginnings to some degree, and what it takes to be Beulah. She has few enemies, and yet some of her friends will surprise you. Her association with Sinya, and the love that develops between the two is a poignant counterpoint and leave her to make some life changing decisions. Sinya too, faces something he is totally unprepared for, even considering his older than his years experience. Nothing could begin to get him ready for Beulah, those that surround her, and the experiences to come. Never did he even contemplate settling down, but that could end up being one of the decisions he may have to make.
