As he sat playing on the balcony outside his room one night, seven year old Griff watched his father and an unknown woman pull up to their house. A few minutes later, he sees his mother and father come out of the house together and is shocked to see his mother aiming a gun towards his father. As he watches in disbelief, Griff’s mother shoots and kills his father and his father’s red headed companion before taking her own life. Griff learns to live with the loss of his parents, but because of this momentous night, Griff develops an unrealistic hatred of any woman that has red hair. As he ages, Griff follows in his father’s womanizing ways. He is the kind of man that takes what he wants from women and then leaves them.

At 28, Griff Nyle lives and breathes politics. When he met Senator Bliss and his daughter Lorelei, he was attending law school. Although Griff had Yankee blood coursing through his veins, the Senator took him under his wing and was willing to help him realize his dream of being President of the United States. The only stipulation was that Griff had to marry Lorelei. With his dark hair and blue eyes, Griff has never had a problem with attracting the opposite set. He has a strong chin that frames a full, sensuous mouth and dimples whenever he smiles that the ladies find irresistible. Griff has the charm and charisma that enables him to have any women that he wants. Women chased him, he took what he wanted from them, and he was happy with that arrangement. In Griff’s mind, all he sees when he looks at Lorelei is her bright titian colored hair. He might be forced to take her as his wife to realize his dream, but he makes sure that she knows he will never truly make her his wife in reality. He was not above using anyone he could to attain his goal.

Lorelei is the prefect First Lady for Griff. She knows how to conduct herself and carry on an intelligent conversation. She has a sweet pixie face that is always fresh and glowing and is a staunch Southern Belle. She knows what her place is and how to handle her responsibilities. She has long dark red hair and bronze eyes, framed by untamed lashes. Lorelei has full, ripe lips and a natural grace about her. As a girl of 18, she lived in a fantasy world daydreaming about Griff, indulging in erotic musings about what her life would be like with Griff. Her father encouraged her to marry Griff even though Griff made it obvious that he did not love her or want her for a wife. She consoles herself that once they are married he will come to love her.

When Lorelei realizes that her marriage to Griff was just a pretense to further his career, she struggles with her sense of loss. Lorelei has been in love with Griff since she first met him and does not understand his animosity towards her. Her eyes were opened on their wedding night by the fact that Griff did not feel it necessary to spend the night making love to her, but spent it having crude sex with another woman. His adultery that she faces day in and day out begins to take a toll on the love that she feels for Griff and she struggles with his coldness and cruelty towards her. As a southern lady, Lorelei knows that it is her place to stand behind her man no matter what, but she is not sure how much more she can take before her fiery temper explodes. Griff has always seen her as the obedient wife, but he is in for a rude awakening if he does not get his act together and stop flaunting his bimbos in her face.

The Rogue President by Audrey Godwin explores the relationship between the President and First Lady and all the intrigue that goes on behind the scenes. Over the course of the 10 plus years of their shared lives, Lorelei has maintained her love for Griff in the face of his unfaithfulness and cruelty towards her. She is hopeful that once they are in the White House he will turn to her for companionship and come to love her for who she is and not hate her just for the color of her hair. The situation does not work out exactly as Lorelei thought it would. While their relationship might appear loving on the outside, the interaction between them when they are alone is a different story. Lorelei knows how to take care of herself and once she makes up her mind that enough is enough, she refuses to take any grief from her skirt-chasing husband. She decides that he needs a taste of his own medicine after all the embarrassment and shame he has heaped on her.

Griff Nyle might have been smart enough to be elected President of the United States, but he has a lot to learn about women and what they want and need. The Rogue President is a realistic and amusing tale of two people that find themselves coming to terms with their marriage and how they fit in each other’s lives. I found myself laughing out loud at the interaction between Griff and Lorelei. Griff is a man that is ruled by his hormones and does not see anything wrong with taking sex when it is offered to him. He finds it extremely difficult to change his ways in midstream. Griff finds that his lust for Lorelei as a woman and his hatred for her as a redhead were continually at war. Lorelei is a woman that has decided that enough is enough and her fickle husband needs to be taught an important lesson. Ms. Godwin has created a humorous look at the life in the White House without becoming bogged down in political jargon. In addition to the sizzling sex and raw lust, the tale includes assassination attempts, conspiracies, and blackmail. If Griff and Lorelei ever do come together, they just might burn up the sheets.
