Helena Madison, or Laney, is a thirty-nine-year-old high school Sex Ed teacher who realizes that having sex is a piece of cake; it’s the intimacy that is hard. A widow for five years now, she has committed herself to staying celibate. She knows there will never be another man like Jared. Even though things weren’t right between them when he died, didn’t mean she didn’t care for him. Not wishing to even think about the matter of sex until she goes on a blind date, she refuses to struggle with any emotional ghost. But a blind date injects a man years younger into her closed world. When she does get to know a bit more about Alex she realizes his age is not as young as she imagined. Their attraction for the other seems to float in the air in a way she never dreamed. It’s amazing how their blind date leads them into a warm romance, yet, at times, she still feels troubled by the age difference, no matter how hard she tries to put it behind her. But the more time they share together, that age thing begins to fade.
As they grow closer, Laney begins to worry, as they both harbor secrets. Since she was once involved with a twin in her past years, she never wishes anything of that nature again, and unless Alex comes clean with her about some things in his life, she wonders can she allow him completely into her life. It is something that she fears when it comes to intimacy with another man again. But the more she dwells on the young, sexy man, she questions if she should keep the door shut to a comfortable life she has accepted or let Alex in before he disappears never to be seen again? This summer romance could promise much more if she’s not afraid to open up her heart.
Alex Barnes is quite opposite from Laney. At the ripe age of 30, he decides to begin college. His life hasn’t been an easy one the past fifteen years that left much heartbreak, abuse and feelings of being used. Still he would like to find someone that would be understanding and loving, so he could feel that intimacy and closeness in his life. When his roommate sets him on a blind date, Alex enters a new life that soon changes forever. He never imagined a fierce night of passion, with Laney, would bring out defenses with her that he wishes to unlock. Unfortunately, someone enters the picture complicating matters, by the name of Sam Madison, who he quickly learns is her dead husband’s, identical twin, which leads to some alarming secrets with the interfering man. Luckily, Alex continues to hear a voice in his heart that leads him to expose the real truth behind the Madison twins that begin to reveal divided loyalties and sexual escapades that were disastrous. As the invisible voice and person, in his heart, continue to argue and push him forward with Laney; he realizes the secret could be one that destroys any chance that he might have in reaching Laney’s trust. The pondering question he considers, is the strong love they share enough to put the past behind them and start a new life together for a lifetime of happiness.
Rock Paper Scissors is a splendid read about finding love and getting over heartache. The romance does have questions that both characters can easily relate and together they work out the knots to make things clearer for them both. Neither have any children to bring into the relationship, only themselves with a bunch of love to share. The only problem is telling their heart this is the one and once the heart has been pierced with this wonderful sensation they shouldn’t keep fighting the feeling and pushing it aside. Laney and Alex bring out much believability in this wonderful engaging story. The secondary characters bring in some moments to this great read, too.
Deborah Boyer pens a fascinating read that kept this reader turning the pages. I enjoyed the way she incorporated the recollections of the past into the storyline. The passion between the characters sizzle with spice and her creative penmanship has a way of delivering the love scenes that carry the reader into the ambience. The story flows smoothly from the start all the way to the end. The passion practically lifts steam from the pages and almost ignites the book when Laney and Alex are together. Sexy, sensual, full of romance and learning to accept that there is love the second time around, not only with great sex, but an intimacy that makes it so much more fun to be with the one you love. Ms. Boyer brings her characters to life that not only touches the heart but reaches to the soul from a wonderful storyteller that fashions a terrific read.
