Don Manusco is a family man with a wife and a young daughter. One day he receives a phone call from his wife Liz claiming that their infant daughter, Pamela, is missing. Liz said she only went to take a nap, and now the child is gone. Don is at work and wonders why she didn’t phone the police, but she doesn’t have an answer. She picked up the phone and called him first. He hurries home only to find the police there and questioning him about his wife. They don’t understand how someone could have entered the house and taken Pamela with his wife napping. When the police casually suggest that Liz might have had something to do with the missing child, Don tells the police not to return without a lawyer. The police know nothing about him and his family. They have no reason to even make such a statement.
Don grows distraught with his daughter missing. The impact drives his wife to the point of insanity, and has her taking all kind of medicine. He believes she didn’t concoct any story about their daughter, yet the impact took such a strong turn with her that she is now in a hospital in a coma. The overpowering stress with all the sedatives not to mention what happened and why, to their young daughter just took a toll on her. He spends his time working and visiting with her massaging her hands and talking to her, anything to try to ease her of out of the coma. Now eight years after his daughter’s kidnapping someone presents him a small box with items concerning Pamela. He doesn’t give up hope and follows through to the hospital that houses a girl similar to Pamela. He phones his friend Bill to see if he will drive with him to Chicago and see this child that might be his missing daughter. It could be a wild goose chase or the real thing. Don can’t give up hope until he finally finds his daughter and perhaps spring life back into his wife.
When Bill discovers that the school won’t allow his son Timothy to read the Bible during study hall, he decides to get a lawyer for Constitutional rights. The lawyer he would like to handle the case is Don Manusco but when he hears that Don is not really practicing any more but he has his license, he still searches for the man. He will do almost anything to find this man even when told that Don is not the same man he use to be. He use to know Don as ‘Smitty,’ and now that he has found him he doesn’t understand why he isn’t still practicing more law since his wife is in dire need of medical attention and the money would come in handy. After Bill learns that Don had a daughter kidnapped eight years prior, he is surprised. He never knew the man had any children. His acquaintance with Don has him traveling to Chicago to check out the little girl in the hospital, but Bill fears that the man may be in for a let down again.
Earl Sago is an evil man who is out for retribution. The certifiable lunatic will stop at nothing to finish his plan. He begins to follow Don watching his every move. He has to get rid of the man even if he has to involve the nursing home where he often visits. Earl already knows who Don visits, his chore of getting rid of the man should be easy. He is out for revenge for what Don tried to do to him in court and now the man has come back with an even greater hate since taking his young daughter from him eight years prior.
Matters of Faith is an in depth book that really takes fold from the first page. It automatically takes us right into a kidnapping of a baby straight to accusations from the police blaming the mother. The police feel no remorse that they have pushed the woman over the edge and straight into a coma. The writing is tight and keeps you on the edge of your seat as you try to put the pieces of the puzzle together with the missing baby and who did it. There are times I wanted to rip the heads off the police for what they did to Liz. Even in her distraught phone call to her husband, you could feel the pain she was experiencing. Even years later she is still practically a zombie as her grieving husband, Don continues to search for their daughter, never once giving up hope. When he is faced with answers, I practically felt chills on my body. Robert Allison has blended a terrible tragedy, along with murder, fraud, with a mixture of love and faith throughout the characters as they work together to find much needed answers to the problems surrounding them. Each story is captivating as it creates events that build up to a thrilling conclusion that causes an adrenaline rush.
Robert Allison is a gifted writer who has taken words and made them into a suspense filled book that delivers. He weaves the characters into different stories allowing the reader to feel the emotions that they all must endure. His storytelling has a way of giving hope that things will have light at the end of the rainbow and justice will be served. His writing grips and holds you to the last page. I can not stress enough about this mystery. I really found this book a great read. Matters of Faith will be available at Wings ePress January 2006 in e-book and paperback. Be sure to pick up a copy and be prepared for a heart-racing thriller.
