It was a continuous war between Eadron and Martan. Once they were closely related, now, the Martans preyed on their fellow humans, taking the women into cruel sexual slavery, and causing them pain for all the imagined hurts done to them by the Eadroni. This was the story, this is all that Miranda knows when she and her friends are captured and taken from the vacation planet Littan. Some of the horrors seem to be borne out aboard the transport to which they were taken. As her friends went with her gladly in her “last escape” before she was forced into an unwanted marriage, Miranda feels responsible as some of them are beaten, raped, and treated cruelly until they cry out with pain and humiliation. Herded like animals, naked and frightened, they are taken for sale on Martan, and the jeers and stories Miranda and her friends are told cause them even more fear. Over and over the slave master tells them they will be sold off to a brothel, or killed if they complain, cry, or show any defiance, fear, illness or disobedience. Thoughts of freedom are quickly quashed, and Miranda knows a fear and shame she has never felt before.
Yes, she was trying to escape being sold by her father into an arranged marriage to a dreaded old man. Marriage to Klemeth would be a lifetime of true horror, but at this point she didn’t know which sale was worse. The feeling of being soiled by the many hands touching her, the raunchy and lewd comments, pinches, squeezes, and prodding of many hands was a humiliation she was totally unprepared for in her upbringing. The threat posed by one extremely cruel man named Darius, particularly scared her. Help came from an unexpected quarter, but the man who saved her was not in the market for a companion slave, or so he said. Ending up with that very same man, Jason Dumont, seems to be the lesser of two evils, and as Miranda fearfully settles in to the life of a pleasure slave, she finds some solace in being treated differently than she was led to believe. Still, the fear of being sold again, or being killed was strong within her, the trauma having fused that with her circumstances, but she carries on, learning that Jason is not only handsome of the outside, but innately kind on the inside as well. But still, she is a slave, bought to fulfill his every passion…
The sight of her chained to the viewing room wall, trembling yet stoic in the face of the brutality being foisted on her by a rival on the council named Darius, and a man not known for his kindness or love for the Eadroni, incensed Jason Dumont. No, he was not interested in a companion slave, he had many willing partners he did not have to pay for who were ready and willing to share his life, grace his bed, and satisfy his body. This woman, this Eadroni slave drew him, and he had to have her. Jason did not believe in slavery, and this visit to the slave market did not sit well with him. He had caved to his friend Michael’s pleading to accompany him, and it only verified and strengthened his beliefs. In the end, his compassion and need outpaced his common sense, and he bid an exorbitant sum to get her away from the cruel fate that would await her at the hands of Darius. He knows Darius, his cruelty to the Eadroni, his hatred. He would kill her within a day, and no one would be the wiser. Jason could not leave her to such a fate. There was something about her, a delicacy, a regal bearing in spite of the fear he felt coming off of her in waves. He could read it in her eyes, see it in the trembling of her lips, and it moved him to do the unthinkable.
Jason couldn’t believe he purchased a slave, a companion slave at that! The servants in his household are delighted, and the woman who acts as he housekeeper, Eleanor, is thrilled. She has secretly hoped for the day when Jason would find a woman to bring home to warm his bed, and hopefully his heart. His reluctance to do so bothered her, and Jason knew it well. He did not feel anything for a woman, none had held anything near attraction for him until this little slave caught his eye. He hopes this will not encourage Eleanor, and although she raised him, and was a surrogate mother to Jason, he knows she will not let up on him now. There is an attraction there, and yet he fights it, thinking that Miranda hates him, hates his people, and hates his touch. He wishes things could be different for them, but he knows he must care for her, teach her what she needs to know, and yet is loathe to have her fear, hatred and disdain. He wants her love, her respect, and what seems most impossible of all, her heart. Yes, he has feelings for her, and he would like to know she doesn’t find him so repulsive. Her body responds, but her mind and heart remain cold. He needs to find the key, and do it quickly for her well being and his own.
