From a life in the local orphanage, to being her own woman and of a very independent mind, Hannah Blake never expected her life to take such a turn. The man who had occupied her bed had also occupied her heart ever since those days in the Purgatory Home for Unwanted Children. The danger to Hannah was the fact that they were grown up now, and the attraction was as strong as ever. It has been ten years since she has seen him and there has been much in their lives that has changed. Hannah is back in Purgatory and is teaching school. She went through a lot of changes while away at school, but one thing remnant from that past has remained the same. David. Hannah still remembers the kindness that David showed her when she was first brought to the orphanage, and the sadness she felt when he left. Hannah has always loved David, and she would do whatever it took to help him.

Ten years have passed and now he shows up on her doorstep with his seven year old nephew, Little Bear, and a bullet hole in his side. Ten years, and now together they are on the most incredible mission to save David's sister from the man who had been beating her. Hannah was not one to quarrel with others or stick her nose in where it wasn't wanted, but David had said that Lynch had also been beating on Little Bear, and Bright Eyes was pregnant. The fact David fears for his sister's life, and that Little Bear won't stay with Hannah has brought them to this impasse. She really owes David a debt of gratitude, and even more, she would do it out of love. Foolish she may be, but Hannah will find out whether there is love between them...she is determined.

The Purgatory Home for Unwanted Children just about summed up his situation. To them he was David. No last name, no kin, no friends, just David the unwanted half-breed kid. That all changed when the widow, Regan, married the Sheriff. Then she became Mrs. Walker, and she and Clay adopted him. He is known as David Walker to the white world. To his mother's people, the Comanche he is Spirit Walker. He loves his adoptive parents, but his heart lies with his mother's people. Traveling between the two worlds is not easy. The Comanche accept him, the white man doesn't...unless he is with the Walkers. Once that was a problem, but not anymore. He has done a lot of growing up in ten years, and thanks to Regan and Clay Walker, he has learned how to deal with life.

Now his sister is in trouble. The white man who fathered her son Little Bear has turned out to be trouble. Lynch promised Bright Eyes marriage, but it turned into the same old lie. Walker knows all about that lie because it was told to their mother, and he is the result. He had hoped that Lynch was a good man for his sister's sake. He hates being right. His doubts are fact and the empty promises, the beatings, and his sister's pregnancy have brought things to a head. Little Bear would not stay with Hannah, the only woman he could trust, and now she is traveling with them. Funny how life turns out. The one person he has dreamed about...the woman he has held in his arms more times than he can count is by his side. He will treasure these moments while he can for they may not last long. After all, everyone knows that a half-breed can't marry a white woman...

You may be familiar with the town of Purgatory. We have been there before and although it has a strange name, the people are honest and hard working. Clay Walker is still sheriff. It is a nice place to visit, so Heidi Betts has brought us back again in her latest book Hannah's Half-Breed. David and Hannah are grown now, and once more their paths cross. Hannah has always had David looking over her shoulder like a guardian angel. She didn't always know it though. Now, as Hannah is once more thrust together with David, fate will decide their destiny. It is Hannah's turn to look after David, but they have changed, grown up.

Heidi has done it again and brought us another pair of very memorable characters and taken us back to Purgatory. We met David and Hannah as youngsters in Walker's Widow. Now David and Hannah are grown and facing up to the love that started long ago with Hannah's nightmares in the orphanage. Hannah's Half-Breed is another fine book from Heidi's collection. It came out in January to a bookstore near you. Feel free to add this one to the collection on your "Keeper Shelf". You know you will find it on mine! Dorchester's Leisure Books gives us another great Heidi Betts read.

Yours in good reading,

Rose!
