A trial for disobedience takes place within the Dijinn town of Mecca. Thalia disobeys granting her master, Thorne’s wish. From the beginning, she sensed his evil. Yet, that well-intended defiance tears her away from family, friends and a fiancée. Thalia’s prison is a pink bottle, which Thorne orders thrown into space, obscuring her existence since space travel remains undiscovered in, 67 B.C. Millenniums pass by before a space traveler retrieves Thalia from under an asteroid. However, he has twenty-four hours to uncork the bottle; otherwise, she leaves his hands to await another discoverer.
Captain Rhys Whelan, of the spaceship Atlanti, recovers the pink object positive his parents will enjoy uncovering its historical secrets. The bottle remains on his desk as he commands the ship’s crew towards Liran, at General Vallerii’s orders. While on their course, Liran rebels attack the ship, sending the bottle crashing to the floor. For the first time in many centuries, Thalia experiences freedom.
In a space ship tracking the Atlanti, Thorne feels Thalia’s release from captivity, threatening everything he has built during his immortal life. More than four millenniums ago, his new genie, Sabrina grants him what Thalia denied, immortality. When the Dijinn Prince found out, he made Sabrina immortal as well, a long with a condition that Thalia holds the key to his eternal continence. No wonder he hinders every holder of the pink bottle from ever setting her free, until now.
A unique twist on a classic tale as this genie comes from the cosmos sea, instead of the ocean. Genie in a Bottle takes the reader into deep space, where a century’s old genie is set free in the year 4989, somewhere in the Delta Quadrant. Thalia encounters a changed world where advance technologies have closed the gap between universes. Her mistrust of Rhys believable since her last experienced with a male master stole her freedom. Although her magic weaken by the long period spent inside the bottle, Thalia shifts into invisibility to roam the hallways of Atlanti undetected, even following Rhys around as well. She is awed by the computers and video feeds, but still uncertain about the era she now lives. As she explores the new world, she attracts the Rhys attention, appearing in an elevator he believed unoccupied.
The intrigue mounts, as Rhys cannot fathom how a person can be at one place and then quickly in another. His inquiries about her status on the ship have too many holes, no assigned cabin or records of her attending any Dominion training academies. He has other matters more important than uncovering the identity of one crewmember, such as how ten Dobermans come to roam the ship’s halls, a breed that went extinct during the twenty-fourth century. More so, how two captives vanish from his brig without alerting guards or being video taped, and then he suspicions someone has breached his private rooms’ security. Rhys Second-in-Command connects those events with the arrival of the pink bottle, believing it may be cursed. All this unexplained activity makes a seasoned Captain question his sanity.
Readers will enjoy the parody of suspense as Thorne continues his plan to rule the universe. Attempting to board the Atlanti he obtains blueprints of the ship’s structure. Ensuring his genie, Sabrina’s success in transporting him to where Thalia may reside and not inside the laser cannons or thrusters – definitely life threatening. However, his genie has other plans. Materializing beside Thalia, Sabrina casts a protection spell over her against Thorne; she understands and the key Thalia holds to his ruin. In the meantime, Thorne’s Liran informant, Gente bungles disposing of Rhys and Thalia while they visit the planet. Both survive the blast and falling debris.
Sexual anticipation builds slowly, though gratifying and well worth the wait. Rhys’ female crewmembers have one time or another experienced his bedroom prowess, but when he and Thalia come together its sweet and satisfying, at first. From then on, their frequent unions only get hotter and more adventurous. He likes to take Thalia hard and fast, although she adeptly matches his ardor, inexperienced or not.
Genie in a Bottle is a fun story, filled with intense suspense, futuristic drama, vibrant characters, and stimulating sex. Ms. Springs writes an engaging Thalia, who readily adapts to a changed world, while helping Rhys uncover the threat to his ship and crew. Rhys is strong, honorable leading his crew towards gaining peace on the war-ravaged Liran and revealing the evil man prolonging it. Thorne is a self-absorbed, cruel man who severely beats his current genie, so much that she requires an infirmary stay. He is the epitome of villainy. Ms. Springs has also written Sweet Assassins, which will be released May 2007 through Star Dust, the same publisher for Genie in a Bottle. Star Dust has just picked up another genie book by Ms. Springs, Genie Magic as well, though no slated release date, yet.
