This is not real, it can’t be. Tyree was right when he said not to mess with magick. Of all the things in the world Sully went through before, from seeing his parents die, being separated from his only sister, sent away from the only home he knew, to his eventually becoming a feared privateer, the position he found himself in now defied all logic. He is totally confused, and feels schizophrenic when he finds himself in the body of Chief Andre Sullivan. That’s what happens when you have been given the gift of the Voudou, the arcane magick, and you have the touch to use it. He’s constantly forgetting about his “new body,” and his insistence he is Sullivan Fouquet, Captain of the Sea Nymph, has caused some of Andre’s friends to look askance. But this new world in which he finds himself is nothing like he had experienced or imagined in his spirit form. There’s one good thing about this, he has his old friend, Tyree St. James back again. It is not that they can acknowledge the long standing relationship they share with a lot of others, but the friendship has been patched. Ooh the patches on the relationship were still a bit shaky to say the least, but it is there again, and the ties of the deep friendship they once shared might grow back, strong again with time. For now, he has a problem on his hands, and a mystery to solve.
He well remembers the curse he laid on Lord John Sullivan, and the gift of the Voudou Jeantout had given him in reward for the freedom. Sully and Tyree had assured him of that, taking him from slavery and returning him. Tyree had refused the gift, Sully had not. It is the curse manifesting itself now. He has Andre’s body, he has few of Andre’s memories. Tyree is here in this time. His curse has been broken, and he is solid in his forgiveness and friendship. He helps but now his honeymoon has taken him far from the situation, and the arsons have started again. Sully realizes it is up to him to solve these problems, they may be linked directly to him and to Tyree. Sully knows Tyree suspects one of Peel’s descendants. The man has disappeared, and break ins and fires are starting again. There are clues there, but suddenly Sully is distracted in his hunt. The injuries he is recovering from are not the reason either. She is here, now, the very picture of his beloved fiancée Elizabeth. This woman, this Elizabeth takes his breath away, and she has come here to the one place he would find her, Magnolia Cove. On this body, burns and resulting scars he received on his rescue of Tyree and his lady are healing, but the question of his heart, and the killer and arsonist stalking this community must be solved for him to be truly free.
She has come to Magnolia Cove on a mission of mercy. Elizabeth Hamilton was stunned and quite taken aback when the man kissed her ,called her Elizabeth, and acted as if he had known her well. She has had time to think about it, and although he is familiar, it is only the relationship to her adopted family, she is sure. But she does have a plan for Mr. Andre Sullivan, and she only hopes he will go along with her in this. Elizabeth is devoted to her adoptive family, and will do whatever it takes to help. When all other avenues were exhausted for her cancer-stricken younger brother, Caleb, she decided to track down this last relative. Andre Sullivan is her last hope, and Elizabeth needs to see if he would be a match to Caleb, and to ask if he would be a donor. In this, she is determined, and she knows her brother’s well being and possible cure could lie in the balance, in this man’s decision. She is willing to go along with his fantasies to some extent, but she has a code of conduct for herself. Where she would go to some extremes for her brother, she does have her own standards, and those she will not compromise, not for Andre, Caleb, or anyone else.
Elizabeth is definitely attracted to Andre Sullivan, and although her research shows he was born and raised here, he is puzzled about his Creole Patois, the words that roll off his tongue without thought, the French phrases and epithets that fly from him when he’s unaware. It appears he is a different person when he is not concentrating on being the macho fire chief, yet the men respect him, follow him, and there is no doubt they wish for his quick return. Her resolve is sorely tested by the man’s charming apology for his forwardness, and Elizabeth finds herself attracted to him in spite of her better judgment. There is just something about Andre Sullivan, a mystique, and the more time she spends with him, the deeper she gets into the mystery surrounding him. She is inexorably drawn in to the world in which he is the main focus, the main target, and when they walk into harm’s way, Elizabeth realizes Andre is much more than she could ever have guessed. He has a history far beyond her wildest imaginings, and now the key for her is to find that one thing which can unlock his heart, his mind, and break the curse binding him, his heart, and the Sullivan family. This she has to do, for Caleb, for Andre, and yes, for herself.
Welcome to Magnolia Cove, formerly the haunt of Tyree St. James, renegade, patriot, privateer, and his friend and fellow Captain Sullivan Fouquet. Magnolia Cove is again the setting for Nina Bruhns’s newest adventure for her intrepid privateers in her new offering, The Forbidden Enchantment. Like Tyree St. James, Sullivan Fouquet is a good man, but he is a man bent on revenge. Rewarded for saving the lives of a voudou priest and his followers, they were offered the reward of voudou magick, a gift not to be taken lightly. The magick can only be wielded by those so gifted, and to be gifted, one mush have the touch. Both the captains possessed the ability, met the requirements, only Sully accepted the gift. Ultimately, this acceptance led to the scrape he finds himself in today. There is one thing to be grateful for in all of this mess. His best friend and partner of old, Tyree St. James, has found the woman of his dreams, and he is again living in the world married to his very adorable love, Clara. Now it seems to be up to Sully to see ended the curse which brought him to this current state of affairs. Out of his own mouth he damned the descendants of the man who cruelly killed his father, raped his mother, and tore his family apart.
The Forbidden Enchantment, Sully’s tale, is told in the same delightfully suspenseful style as we have come to expect from Ms. Bruhns, and as always, the story is engrossing, the well-developed characters flawed but very human. Excellently crafted, this story is one of danger, love, passion, magick, and the desire of a man who finds revenge is a dish best served cold, but if it is too cold, it loses its flavor. The relationship between Sully and Elizabeth is not at all like the one he remembers from the past. This Elizabeth is different in her life, her love, and her loyalty. She is very different from the Elizabeth he knew, for his old love had her secrets, ones only now coming to light. Sully must resign himself to remembering he is not courting his old flame, but a new one who has no knowledge of him, or of his past.
