Victoria knew her life was probably ending. Neil was again in a drunken rage, and her being on the phone had triggered the beating. As she crouched in the bathroom, her world spinning around her, she could only scream, cry out for help. Now she is faced with the struggle to come up with the reasons she is still alive, but how, and now where is what she has yet to discover. She only hopes that she is far from Neil's grasp, and safely hidden from him forever. She is not aware of much but the tall dark figure who towers over her, of the voice who has pulled her back from the brink of what she is sure had been certain death. The name he speaks is strange, the language different, but she understands. Only as her awreness returns does Victoria realize how strange her life has become.
The day to day sturggles are made easier at first for Victoria, becasue Mayati, the woman in whose body she has found herself, has decreed that she will have no one see her until she has regained her figure. The fact that the child she bore did not survive seems of little consequence to the carrying out of those orders. Victoria is puzzled at this until she begins to realize through dreams, and conversations with Khaemhat, the kind of vain and selfish person Mayati really was inside. Self-indulgence could have been Mayati's middle name, and Victoria senses the awe her difference inspires in the man who claims her as wife.
Khaemhat is startled by his realization of the trick played by the fates as he watches the woman who is his wife. He hears her tale, and has no recourse than to accept what she has told him. The differences are plain to see, to one who knows Mayati so imtimately, they glare. Gone is the vain, demanding, and selfish young woman he adored, and in her place is a new and exquisitely beautiful soul. She calls herself Victoria, and she is as different as night is from day to the woman to whom he has been married. This is a creature of light, delicate, fragile, damaged, and needing healing. As a priest of Osiris, he has no choice but to accept what the gods have bestowed upon him, and he is determined to wipe the shadows and the pain from those still beloved features.
As time progresses, Khaemhat find himself more in love with this creature of light than he was ever with the Mayati he had known so long. The determination, the light, and the soul he finds so attractive to his own are becoming necessary to his happiness. The hope is that she will stay, and be graced by the gods with a long life with him. He believes in the generosity of the gods, a second chance given as her story must be believed as told. In this, he is determined to provide her with the love, safety and happiness she did not have before. He knows that only in his arms can the voice of the one who killed her be silenced, and it is in his arms he wishes for her to stay.
For those who wish a trip to ancient Egypt, then crack the cover of Egyptian Nights by Jennifer Mueller. The story is a pretty one, of the love of two people that crosses time to find fulfillment. From the night her husband beats her in a drunken rage, Victoria's spirit seeks escape. Onhearing the death chant, the ancient words to help guide a spirit across the waters to the underworld, Victoria is drawn into a life far different from any she has ever known. The man she finds there is not what she expected either, nor did she expect love. As for the man, Khaemhat is not sure of what brough the stranger to inhabit the body of his wife, but he finds her to be a caring and beautiful person who holds more allure for him than the spirit of Mayati ever could. He is struck my her manner, her desire to please, and her confidence as it builds as she adjusts. The time and customs are strange in this place into which she has been thrust.
Ms Mueller blends the vibrant past into a story of passion and love that is able to truly transcend time and place, and bring lovers together from two disparate cultures and times. Artfully written, and skillfully cravted, Egyptian Nights is a story you will want on your keeper shelf. It is one of the must read books from Linden Bay Romances, so wander on over there, and pick up a copy of Egyptian Nights today. I don't think you will be sorry, and I know you will be wanting more.
Yours in good reading,
