The old west is hard on a woman but even harder when running a predominately-male business. During this era, propriety dictates that women are only suitable for taking care of home and hearth. However, one woman stands firmly against such unfair and baseless beliefs. Secretly, a man of questionable integrity admires her determined resolve against decorum, providing her unsolicited protection from those who wish to see her fail.
After her father’s death from consumption, Cassie Taylor assumes control over Taylor Irrigation, a water conservation company. She is a strong, independent woman; traits stemming from a childhood spent dodging ridicule for having a Hispanic mother. That experience affords her a high tolerance towards the bigoted criticisms she receives, as the company’s water ration members consist solely of men. Amos Barrington, owner of the Triple C, is Cassie’s worse critic. He complains constantly about the water rations, unable to sustain his vast land holdings; not to mention owning the most stock in Taylor Irrigation which should allot him a whole lot more water usage. His sending men furtively to gauge the water level, making sure Cassie is not cheating him, only fuels her dislike for the man. Cassie is certain that Barrington and his men are behind the severed calf’s head pinned to her bunkhouse door, which does not deterred her from making a success of her father’s company.
Cole Mitchell is fast with guns, establishing his reputation as a lethal killer. Not much else is known about him except he’s paid to protect and kill. Working for Barrington, Cole meets the owner of Taylor Irrigation, the festering thorn in his employer’s side. He is impressed with Cassie’s unwavering tenacity to continue her father’s business however, her fiery green eyes and raven hair draws his attention more. Cole thinks it odd that a woman prefers men’s trousers to wearing dresses, although he does enjoy the view as she walks away. Watching Cassie ride away from the sheriff’s office, he vows to possess her, and none too gently either.
A dedicated fan of romantic westerns, Dry Moon is an engrossing piece of fiction. The suspense unravels quickly drawing the reader into the story. Amos Barrington no longer waits for Cassie to give the necessary water to run his ranch. Involving his main foreman, Raines, the two plot to put Cassie where every woman belongs, under the control of a man. However, someone in Amos’ household gives away their clandestine plot that sends Cole to Cassie’s aid. Cassie looses everything but earns Cole’s skilled protection. He hides her at his sister’s boarding house until Encanto’s sheriff gathers enough evidence against Barrington.
During their confinement, Cole cannot resist temptation with Cassie so near. After his thwarted attempt to take her on the front porch, another opportunity arises where his private fantasies come to life. Cassie and Cole are sultry when they finally come together as their passion singes the sheets. Cassie’s everything Cole imagines, matching him until both give in to their long awaited sexual peak. Still, more intrigue ensues as deceit comes from an unexpected source. A scorned woman endangers not only Cassie but Cole’s sister life too. Then in Encanto, another woman faces her fears, which could save Cassie’s life.
A Wild Rose Press publication, Dry Moon is Ms. DaRosa’s first book, captivating with amusing moments and exciting action. The stout, authentic characters make this story quite enjoyable. Cassie’s stalwart, fearless personality is tangible, whereas Cole’s quiet gallantry genuine. The story moves smoothly holding the reader’s attention, while handing over a pleasing pictorial. Ms. DaRosa has another book coming out though Wild Rose Press, Tempted Fate: Legacy of the Celtic Brooch Book 3. This series looks like a fun and thrilling read too.
