A bang shook the room and Noelani‘s heart. The door rattled as the tip of an ax appeared through a large split.
She gasped in disbelief and glanced down at the fuzzy grounds, dizzy with fear, then back at the door where she could already see his hand reaching for the bolt. In a second he would be in the room.
She swung her legs over the ledge, wiped her eyes as if to clear her sight, caught her breath—and jumped.
Lorenzo Venturelli is an elegant, rich, spoiled, and greatly pampered man. Thanks to his internet business, he has more money than he really knows what to do with, but it can't buy the one thing he wants beyond anything else - a wife and a family. He was brought up alone, a mother who walked out on an abusive relationship, and a father who was distant and cold. In spite of everything, he has a huge distrust of women, and yet he had found one he thought was different. He was apparently wrong because he found her naked with his partner, and cut all ties. A woman has betrayed him yet again. Lorenzo thought Noelani Mulden was special, but he was a poor judge of women to say the least. He should know better, but then he has worked very hard at garnering a very broad reputation as a playboy. It was also that very reputation that could be his downfall. This is especially true since Noelani is claiming to be pregnant with his child, and he doesn’t trust her to be telling him the truth.
Now he has a big problem, and Lorenzo does not know how to handle it, or the people involved. First and foremost was Noelani. The woman he hoped to spend his life with is accused of attempted murder, yet somehow he cannot see her in the role of murderess. There was Jeff Rogers' wife, Marta, who was missing and thought to be visiting family in Australia. She was distraught because of Jeff's philandering and wanting a divorce. There was a chance Noelani was innocent, but he wasn't going to be made a fool of again. Then there was the story of her being pregnant, and he knew it was Jeff's child. Lorenzo caught him with Noelani naked in Jeff's suite, and it was clear what had been going on. Now she was claiming the child was his, not Jeff's, and if there was one thing certain, there would definitely be a paternity test when the child was born. Lorenzo will be sure of the father of the baby and there will be no cloud of doubt over his parentage. There would be no doubt, but till then...
Noelani Mulden has no doubt in her mind about the identity of the father of her child. She has been faithful to one man, and Lorenzo should know that if he knows nothing else. She has, however, been hurt by him and is now angry and scared due to circumstances beyond her control. Lorenzo is the one she had trusted with her heart, and he has betrayed her, accused her of cheating with his partner, and won’t listen to the truth. She had never had much of a family life, her cousin Kaia is all she has, and family is one thing she craves. Noelani was hoping Lorenzo would be the start of that family, but with his accusations, there is no chance of that anymore. She is now wary of anything he might say or do, yet she has no one to turn to but Lorenzo at this point. She had very little hope he will really be able to get her named cleared, or that he will even really want to help her prove her innocence.
Noelani does not understand why Lorenzo refuses to believe her and in her innocence. She has never felt love, and yet she is fairly sure she does love him. She days in school were nothing to go by, she was bullied mercilessly by her classmates and others. Sports and testing her limits was her refuge back then, and she was a champion. When she was stalked, she turned to her skills and athleticism taking lessons in shooting firearms, quickly becoming a crack shot. She owns two guns, but one is missing, and that adds to the problems facing her. Someone is setting her up, but who? She is alone, not able to trust anyone, not even the police. Circumstances are rigged against her, the evidence points directly to her, but why? What puzzles her most is the attacks seem personal, and there is no end to the venom spouted by one particular tabloid reporter. Who could possibly hate her enough to want her jailed, or now, from the looks of things, dead…
Nancy Baron Wythe is a talented writer and has several genres under her belt. In Designs on You, she delves into a world where a young woman’s past comes back to haunt her, and yet she is totally unaware of the connections. The plot is convoluted, and its plotters go to great lengths to insure Noelani is convicted of attempted murder. So great is the hate toward her that all stops are pulled out to get rid of her, tabloid articles, murder charges, kidnapping, and some of this activity points towards the only people in her corner, her cousin Kaia and Lorenzo. Meanwhile, the true murder is getting lost in the shuffle as the noose is gleefully tightened around Noelani’s neck. It comes to a point where Lorenzo has to choose sides, but his distrust seals his own fate. He realizes too late that Noelani is the woman he has been looking for, the one woman who would give him the unconditional love he has been searching for all his life.
In Designs on You by Nancy Baron Wythe is a read you will not be able to put down. So many times you think the story is coming to an end, and then another twist comes up, and somebody does something you should have seen coming, like hiring killers to track Noelani, and the ball is thrown. This action as with many others results in tossing all involved into another spiral of careening emotions. This is not a book of or for wimps as the characters have strengths they can only find by having their feet put top the fire. The big question remains, can Lorenzo and Noelani find the passion and the love he has so carelessly thrown away?
