She was always on the fringes of things, an unwanted burden. The aunts didn't want Irisa, and the Company really doesn't seem to want her either. That she got a position on this expedition was in and of itself a miracle, but the mistreatment, the pats on the head, and the constant restrictions on her movements were really wearing to her. Why wouldn't they just let her do her job? What was the problem? Sure, she knew that she had problems in a society that seemed to put great emphasis on the normal, but she was not incompetent, she knew her job, and she excelled at it as well. She was shorter than what was considered average for her race, and that was a handicap that she had worked hard to overcome. She had earned her position as artist on this mission, and it was really frustrating that she was unable to do the job that she joined the expedition to do. She may not be the most beautiful or graceful of people, but to treat her with the disdain that they would a child was not fair. The grievances keep piling up, until she feels like she would soon explode if she cannot relieve the pressure.
The fact that there is finally something for her to do, is not really that much of an improvement in the scheme of things. She is a talented artist, and she is well aware of it, that is a strength that got her aboard the expedition. She really thought that things would be better away from Boohan, but she is realizing that some things just follow you everywhere. She thought things would be different, and the crushing reality that they aren't is still something with which she has to deal. It is hard for dreams to die, specially when those dreams embody all her hopes for love, acceptance, and family, but the reality is laid out for her to look at here. It is not pretty. Even as her pride takes yet another blow, she becomes lost and separated from the others, chance has a secret and a surprise in store for her...
He is spending a lonely vigil on an uninhabited planet. It is suitable for his purposes, and will definitely offer hope for his people. He could have left long ago, but his isolation is self-imposed, as he struggles to come to terms with the burden he bears. Niallan blames himself for a mishap that he could not predict, and that it cost a student her life, is a phantom that haunts him still. He comes from a planet that is in dire straits, for it is in danger of destruction. Niallan has, with great risk to himself, discovered several planets to which the population of his doomed planet can be evacuated. About a third of the population of Halibatt have been relocated, and are now safely out of the path of the planet killer. Although he has done much for his people, he has not done the most important thing of all. He has not forgiven himself. He still beats himself with guilt for Mardinn's death, and this current solitude which he has forced upon himself is a way for him to try to atone for his failure.
Traveling with only his companion, Niallan is surprised by the appearance of the woman at Chepti's side. She is not of his race, but there is something about her that strikes a chord in him. There is definitely a feeling and a sense of drawing together that floods him, and his curiosity is aroused for the first time since Mardinn's death. The woman is an interesting blend of naiveté and innocence, and the feelings that she stirs in him are quite unexpected. He expected that he would someday chose a mate, but this small female brought about all the emotions he expected to have with and for his chosen mate. The tall, handsome, purple-haired explorer never expected his wildest dreams would be filled by the small, slender, incredibly beautiful human female.
