Deidre LaCroix is summoned back to Lafourche, Louisiana after being away for six lonely painful years to take her grandmother’s place as their local healer. She has learned to put her pain in the past where it belongs and move on with her life, coming back with all of her grandmother’s healing knowledge and a degree in nursing. She is summoned at three am by a young boy who says there is someone who needs her help in the old Walker cabin. Who could it possibly be since maw maw Walker had passed away also? She knocks, waits a few minutes then knocks again only harder. She suddenly hears a lot of crashing around and cursing. The person is male with a foul mouth who in turn mistakes her for her grandmother. More than a little irritated she starts to walk away then changes her mind at the same time the door to the cabin opens up and in the doorway stands the man who’d broke her heart six years before. She tends his wound and breaks down in his arms as the past years and the last recent weeks come crashing down on her.
Jacob Walker is back after receiving the keys and the deed to Jezzi Walker’s land. He knew that he has to come home. He left Bayou Lafourche with a broken heart. At the behest of his childhood sweetheart’s grandmother, who told him that if he loved Deidre, he should let her go to live her life and so he did, going as far as to leave her without a word never to see her for six long years.
While trekking through the swamp he accidentally steps in a trap that rips a six-inch gash on his foot and he needs help bad. He gets a visitor at three am, thinking it is old Maw maw LaCroix; he comes face to face with the woman he walked away from six years ago. He lets her help him with his wound and winds up comforting her.
Inga Mahn’s short story Coming Home, makes you feel her characters’ emotions. Jacob Walker broke her heart six years ago, but is Deidre ready to have Jacob walk back into her life as if nothing happened? Although her heart and body want to, will she give in to or resist what his boxer clad body offers. Jacob Walker is back but has no idea that Deidre is also in town and it looks as if Mamere LaCroix is playing matchmaker even from her grave. Will he fall in line with what the old lady has planned or will he walk away from her again.
This story is a journey of the mind and heart between two young people who probably would not have really known what love really is until they’d separated for a while. Their love is made strong by their separation. Coming Home is a good read and I recommend it to you all. My only gripe is that it is short. But that is the only thing that I see wrong.
