Simon Legree started life out as a Yankee, but his desire to experience more than just seduction led him to buying a plantation in Arkansas. Due to his pale gray eyes and sun-bleached hair, Simon was never at a loss for female companionship, but he wanted to experience the thrill of domination and total possession. The cotton plantation that he purchased was a means to an end. Instead of having slaves to raise his cotton, he had cotton so that he could have slave girls at his disposal.
When the Civil War started, Simon joined the Confederates in the South Carolina Artillery, to fight for what he felt was a just cause, the freedom to fulfill every man’s secret wishes for slave girls. After Yankee soldiers capture Simon, he finds himself the star attraction at the Armory Square Hospital. Placed in a private cage with no view, visitors are charged 15 cents each to come and see the brutal, lustful slavemaster.
Cassy finds herself nursing Simon back to health at the Armory Square Hospital. As his former favorite slave girl, she feels an obligation to protect Simon and tries to keep his identity a secret from the Yankee Officers. Cassy has piercing black eyes and pale honey colored skin. She has been free from Simon for many years now and is in a relationship with Captain David Slocum of the Yankee Army. David is in his early twenties and has a wild thatch of red hair, which matches his freckles.
While still in his cage, Simon meets another of his former slaves Sambo. Sambo is one of the former overseers of the plantation and he was charged with keeping the other slaves in line. He is a dark chocolate brown color and has arms that are massive. Sambo is now a Sergeant in the Union Army and is in Washington on leave when he comes to visit Simon. In catching up on old times, Sambo shares he has married Lucy, another of Simon’s former slaves. Lucy was a young slave with golden skin from Kentucky originally, but Simon had bought and given her to Sambo for companionship. Sambo won Lucy’s love through his gentleness and patience.
The Captive Master by Jackie Rose is written from the point of view of Simon Legree, who was the brutal slave dealer in Uncle Tom's Cabin. He tells his account of woe and former savagery with frankness and willingly admits that he cares nothing for moral laws. The story starts with the introduction of the Five of Wands Tarot Card. This card depicts five individuals that are of different colors fighting amongst themselves.
