Freelancer Marassa Kohldian and her co-pilot Walnik struggle to safely land their spaceship on Corella 9-C, a planet reported to be uninhabited. Bringing the ship in through a forest was not the easiest landing, but they have survived with only minimal damage to the ship and themselves. Marassa is frantic to get her ship running again. Her cousin is expecting to receive the guns that she is transporting so that an offensive can be launched to start the Lahtviana revolution by attacking the Concordance’s headquarters. The planned attack is only four days away. Marassa does not have a moment to lose. She is not sure how she is going to be able to patch the leak in the fuel lines and get her ship back in condition to leave the planet. While trying to repair her ship, she comes to realize that the most attractive man she has seen in a long time lives on the planet. Obviously, the reports that there was no sentient life on this planet were wrong.

Marassa is a woman that can take care of herself, so when she has the overwhelming urge to curl up against Cadan and let him take care of her she is stunned. Cadan’s tall, lean body is made to offer comfort to a woman. The feelings that she experiences when she first touches Cadan remind her of the Vandebian Bond that she heard about during her childhood. She had always thought that the bond was the thing of fairy tales, but she is not so sure now. Cadan seems too good to be true, but she fears that if she does not take the chance now, she will not be offered another one. During her stay on the planet, Marassa becomes friends with the Centaurs that also reside on Corella 9-C. The half-human and half-equine creatures are magnificent and peace loving. Marassa is not sure that she will be able to convince the Centaurs to protect themselves from Concordance forces, but she will give it her best shot.

Captain Cadan Montgomay walked away from the Concordance two years ago. He was a hero and had won many medals during his military career before he disappeared suddenly. In the Concordance, sexual control meant military control, and Cadan was very high in the ranks, having completed nine levels. Cadan has spent the last two years protecting the Centaurs from discovering. According to Concordance rules, all life is reportable, but Cadan has first hand knowledge of what will happen to their planet if they are discovered. All his efforts to teach the gentle-hearted Centaurs the art of war have failed and he is frustrated in his attempts to ensure their safety. Little does he know that one woman will be able to accomplish in a few short days what he has spent months trying to do.

Cadan knows that his friendship with the Centaurs is a vital part of who he is and he does not want to change that. His single-handed fight to make sure that they are not discovered is tiring, but he will not allow them to be destroyed. While living near the Centaurs, Cadan has come to realize that their loving nature with each other is part of their very makeup. While he might yearn to experience the same, he knows that their protection is more important than finding his own mate. When Cadan finds Marassa stranded on the planet with no means to get off, he knows that his luck has changed. The feelings that he has for her overwhelm him. He is a man of honor and while he might want to force her to stay with him instead of leaving with Walnik, he will not take away her free will. Cadan is amazed that the woman he loves is able to realize that the Centaurs will never agree to outright warfare and she goes about training them from a self defense angle, hoping that this will enable them to protect their loved ones.

Cadan’s Cause by Mary Winter is a tale of how one man sacrifices and battles for the safety of a noble race and the woman that was fated to be his for all time. Cadan’s cause is a righteous one. He gave up his position of power as a Captain in the Concordance so that he could follow his heart and do what he knew was the right thing to do. Torn between staying with Cadan to help protect the Centaurs and continuing with Walnik to deliver the much-needed weapons to her cousin, Marassa longs to jumps in with both feet to assist the Centaurs. Walnik has been her partner for several years and she is not sure that she can handle knowing that she has disappointed him. Marassa fits into the open and laid back attitude that is part of the Centaurs culture and she finds her heat rising knowing that they could be watching the interactions between Cadan and herself. Marassa realizes that she is important to both Cadan and the Centaurs and it nice to be needed for who she is and not what she could do for them.

I enjoyed reading Cadan’s Cause by Ms. Winter. She is talented at bringing her characters to life. The vivid description of the love that Cadan and Marassa share is a welcome part of their story. The pages sizzle with the animalistic nature of their union. Cadan is not above saying that he is sorry when he comes to the wrong conclusion. He takes his self-imposed responsibility for the Centaurs seriously. Marassa’s struggle to do right by both her cousin and the Centaurs, which shows her as the strong independent woman that she is. Pick up a copy of Cadan’s Cause today from to see if their efforts are enough to save the inhabitants on Corella 9-C and to find out if Marassa will make Cadan’s cause her own.

Yours Sincerely,

Annmarie
