Josh was the result of being saved from the dying arms of his mother, Colleen Hardigan by her husband Brian, a Zogone scientist. Colleen was brutally murdered by a Puritan Vampire, yet Josh lived on as her legacy, his mother and father were cryogenically frozen until their last incarnation was possible. He survived several long years of hardship, yet became a decent young man who orbits an unknown planet very much far away from home. Josh would have liked to have gone on the journey on his own, and dislikes having too many people around him, as he strikes others as a bit of a loner. It was only protocol that invaded his much coveted privacy.
In his time voyaging around space, Josh realises the threat the Puritan Vampires have over their prized humanity. He sees just how fragile that can be, and in many ways it is something he loathes about being that particular race. With the help of the others Josh manages to find the enemy causing all the trouble, and tries to get to him, his problem comes when he has to make the really bad decisions.
Snow is Josh's potential girlfriend and she meets him while on the voyage. She is an avenger of what happened to her people, and resents Josh’s team coming onto their land with weapons of destruction looking for a criminal and wanting her father’s help. She feels as if she has no control over what is happening on her land, and wishes everything would return to normal as they have managed to have peace on their world without war.
She has lived among her people for many years and stays clear of any violence as it is in her moral code that she is peaceful and anti-war. Although she dislikes Josh and his party coming along, she warms to Josh and notices a hidden side of him the others missed. Snow is also deeply jealous of other women who share their bed with him, as she wants to take him for her own. What remains to be seen is whether or not she will.
As a novel, Ancient Enemies has a powerful plot, and Debra gives the readers the benefit of her rich imagination with this novel being largely about a science-fiction universe of her creation where anything can and will happen. Her characters are definitely three-dimensional and powerful in their dialogue, and it is excellent that the genre actually made way for some interesting sensual scenes readers will thoroughly enjoy.
Debra A. Soles has written a short masterpiece that will be appreciated by science fiction buffs and sensualists the world over. She writes like a breeze and the reader will be able to tell that a lot has gone into the preparation for this title. Ancient Enemies has many striking characters that can be seen as believable and all have their problems. Ancient Enemies will be out in August of this year and is available from New Concepts Publishing.
