Ammey McKeaf’s life is one of peace and tranquility. Sure, she’s a little spoiled and over protected by her military father and five brothers, but all in all, her life is an easy one. She spends her days with her best friend, Julia, hatching plots to escape unwanted marriages. But war is coming to Azulland, their home country, and nothing is ever going to be the same.

When Julia is brutally murdered, Ammey is sent away from her family in the hopes of seeking a safe place to wait out the war. Before she can reach safety, Ammey is witness to a brutal attack resulting in the burning of a village and the deaths of her guards, two of her father’s most trusted men. She finds herself in the company of Forzenay’s Five, the infamous assassins known throughout Azulland.

Almost instantly, Ammey is involved in their plots and missions. Vincent, the surliest of the five assassins (not to mention the most handsome) is against allowing this woman to aide them in their quests at first. Soon, he begins to warm up to her and teaches her self-defense and finds out that she’s pretty darn good with a sword. Ammey finds herself falling for the gruff Vincent but before she can act on them there is work to be done.

Through many different, and sometimes hair-raising, adventures, Ammey is separated from the Five and sets out on her own road through the war torn country she loves to find her way back home to her family. Unfortunately, Fate has decided that her reunion with her kin is to be postponed and she meets up with the most dangerous man in the land, Marko Corin, king of Bellux-Abry.

But Marko isn’t as bad as everyone believes. He’s a man of many faces and soon Ammey begins to fall under the spell of seduction he weaves. How can a woman love two men? How can she make the right choice when the time comes?

Jane Shoup has created a world like none other I have read. In a style that reminds me of Bertrice Small, Ms. Shoup captivates the reader from the first sentence to the last period. Ammey McKeaf is the first book in this series and I am eagerly waiting for the next book. Ammey’s adventures will draw you in and you’ll find yourself holding your breath to see what will happen to her next. Ammey’s courage and determination are what makes this character seem so alive and amazing. The men in her life only add to her vibrant personality.

In this reviewer’s opinion, Ammey McKeaf is a sure fire hit. Once you pick it up, you will not be able to put it down. This fast paced book will keep you on edge until the final page where you will close the book and scream, “What happens next??”

Ms. Shoup, we’re waiting for the answer.

Good Reading,

Emma Gayle
