Lily Atherton, massage therapist, and communications operator for a Search and Rescue unit, has lived with secrets she hopes never to reveal. She has made a life for herself and is happy with the knowledge that no one will ever know of her horrible past. She owns the local Physical Therapy Center and enjoys her work with the SAR. Her contented life is shaken when a rescue mission goes wrong and the extraction helicopter crashes on the mountain.

For years she has admired Colonel Rick McIntyre from afar. She keeps distant for reasons other than his age, but when he’s the injured pilot of the downed helicopter, her reservations are tossed aside. She stays with him through the night and through his ICU stay, her voice keeping him connected to the land of the living. Knowing they can never be anything other than acquaintances who leaned on each other to get through a rough patch, Lily tries to keep her distance, but Rick is proving to be irresistible.

Rick McIntyre wakes up to find an angel standing next to his bed. He knows her voice. She was the one to keep him alive during the nightmare on the mountain. She’s young, pretty, and, well, he is definitely attracted. But he has a history of bad relationships. He blames himself for his failed marriage, his failure as a father and tries to resist Lily’s allure. He knows he can never fully commit himself to any woman as long as he is a pilot. Casual works for him and why mess with a good thing?

Things get heated rather quickly between them, but both are afraid of getting too hot too fast. Lily is determined to keep her past buried. Rick is determined to fly again. Neither will give quarter when it comes to opening up to allow someone to grow close. But events surrounding them draw them together and the more they are together, the more they realize how much they need each other.

I can’t write more than that without giving all the best parts away. I must give two thumbs up to Jaxine Daniels for her brilliance here. A Good Place To Land has it all: humor, grief, pain, healing. Ms. Daniels has a flare for blending emotions, situations and flavors, making them explode fabulously across the pages. There are subplots aplenty, but they don’t distract from the main characters and make the book a better reading. Lily and Rick’s journey through past hurts and present pains made this reviewer wish the ending didn’t come too soon.

I highly recommend picking up this book. Emotion cannot always be captured like this and when it is, grab it and hold on. Ms. Daniels has been placed on this reviewer’s list of auto-buys.

Good reading,

Emma Gayle
