Interview with Author Thom Jaymes:
Hi Thom. Thank you for doing this interview. I would like to welcome you to the Romance at Heart Interview and Author Grilling session. *bg* We are interested to find out as much about you as we possibly can, so lets get started...
- Please tell us about your latest book.
My most recent work, Pay Per View, is a short story created for the Wicked line at Cobblestone Press. It's the story of two men who finally get the chance to explore the sexual tension that has been growing between them for quite some time. It's a hot little read. You should totally check it out.
- What can we expect from you in the future?
I've just sold a new short story called Love is Blind to Cobblestone Press's Wicked line. I'm working on two separate full-length novels at this time and a novella that has been contracted. I don't want to go into great detail at this time considering how often my stories change right up to the final edit, but I'm sure that my current readers are going to be very happy with the results.
- How do we find out about you and your books?
You can visit MySpace. It's ripe with information about my recent publications. Feel free to visit my publisher's websites, too. And, of course, you can always Google my name!
- Do you have a favorite comment or question from a reader?
I don't get a lot of comments from readers directly. However, just after Frank's Fantasy was published, I got a very nice email from a gentleman who went on and on about how much he enjoyed the story and really felt connected to my characters. I mean, if your writing can touch one person, you did your job as far as I'm concerned.
- When did you first think about writing and what prompted you to submit your first ms?
Honestly, I sent in my first erotic story on a dare. A friend told me she had stumbled upon an epublisher that was just starting up and was searching for submissions to fill it's catalog. She just knew that they would love my writing. So, I wrote a short story called Robert's Revelation in a single sitting one afternoon and, much to my surprise, it was accepted three days later.
- Where do your ideas come from?
I get this question a lot. Sadly, there's no solid answer. Ideas can come from anything. Music. Television. People watching. Whatever. I get most of mine at 2 o'clock in the morning when I should be sleeping.
- What are your thoughts on love scenes in romance novels, do you find them difficult to write?
They are super easy for me. I mean, sex is fun! Seeing as how I mostly write erotica, the sex is the meat of the story. Yeah, there's a main character and a plot. You know, all that jazz. But, underneath it all, I know that my readers are wanting to quench a hunger that only a raw sex scene or two can fill.
- What does your partner think of your writing?
My partner, Patrick, is one of the most supportive people I know. He never gives me a hard time about sneaking away to tap away on the keyboard. He's always there to keep me motivated. I'm very lucky to have him in my life.
- Do you ever ask him for advice?
All the time! I can't count how many times I've asked what he thought about my current projects, or asked for help with a scene. One time, we were driving and I broke the silence by asking "If I were a vampire and used blood for lube, would that be hot?" He blinked once, smiled, and said, "Yeah. Why not?" If that's not good advice, I don't know what is.
- Who, if anyone, has influenced your writing?
I had a teacher in high school who told me my creative writing assignments were good enough to be published. I took that to heart and started rewriting all the old fantasy tales I had read in the past, changing the character's actions and the endings for my own satisfaction. Then, almost without knowing, I started crafting my own stories.
- What is the most rewarding thing about being a writer?
Knowing that eventually someone will read what you've written and take something away from it. Good or bad, you leave a small imprint on them. It's almost as if the time they spent reading my stories is a page from the book of their life. That's a cool feeling.
- Are there any words of encouragement for unpublished writers?
Don't give up. No matter how many times you get rejected, if you keep it up it will happen. Seeing my name in print is one of the most rewarding experiences I've had and I'd hate to think that a few rejections would have the power to take that away from me.
Thank you very much for taking the time with us and answering our questions. I really appreciate this interruption to your busy schedule. Good Luck, and we will be looking forward to the next delightful creation from your talented imagination!
Yours in good reading,
Rose!
