Interview with Pamela Kinney aka Sapphire Phelan:
Hi Pamela, or would you rather be referred to as Sapphire? Thank you for doing this interview. I would like to welcome you to the Romance at Heart Interview and Author Grilling session. *bg* We are interested to find out as much about you as we possibly can, so lets get started...
- Please tell us about your latest book.
His Girl is the latest romance I have out. It just came out May 2, 2007 from Twilight Fantasies Publications. You can purchase it at twilightfantasies.com. I got the idea for the story one day while I was driving and the song, "My Girl" by the Temptations played over the radio. It is a reunion love story with a vampire theme. The hero’s and heroine’s song is "My Girl". Here is the blurb:
"My Girl" was more than just a song for Evan McPhail and Aimee Saunders; it was the music of their love and passion for each other. For nothing could tear them apart, nor even death.
Then Aimee vanished.
She returns to Evan thirty years later, no longer human. To the tempo of their passion, they prove that doesn’t matter.
- What can we expect from you in the future?
The Curse (Book 1 of the Cursed Dragons series), a short erotic historical fantasy romance comes out July 4th from Twilight Fantasies Publications. I have my first erotic and dark m/m romance, “The Dark Man”, in Forbidden Love: Sacred Bands coming out sometime in July 2007 too. Also coming in 4-6 weeks on Amazon as an Amazon Short, is a sweet super hero romance story, “To Save the Day”. If you like super hero comics or movies and love romance, this is the story for you. Plus an erotic werelion paranormal romance from Phaze and an erotic paranormal romance for Halloween from Twilight Fantasies Publications.
- How do we find out about you and your books?
Through my website: FantasticDreams.50megs.com which I share with my other pseudonym, Pamela K. Kinney, www.myspace.com/SapphirePhelan and I have a newsletter too, that can be joined for free (though must be 18 & older, due to possible sexual content in excerpts and my serialized novella): http://groups.yahoo.com/group/SapphirePhelansParanormalNewsletter.
- How may readers contact you?
- How would you describe the genre in which you do most of your writing?
Paranormal/fantasy/Sci-Fi/Furturistic romance—erotic and non-erotic.
- What motivated you to start writing in this genre?
I enjoy reading it. Plus I also enjoy reading nonfiction research topics on paranormal creatures along with myths and more. That though the lovers may be of different worlds or species still love brings them together.
- What kind of research do you do?
Through book and online, also from a person knowledgeable in something I need information on. I like to look up different paranormal and fantastic creatures, along myths and legends. I also research if someone does firefighting or rides a boat or whatever I try to be as accurate as possible in what I write. So I research.
- Do you have a set schedule for writing or do you just go with the flow?
Since I do not have a day to day job, I like writing during the daytime during the week, though I have done it at night and on weekends, if I have a set deadline to meet. But best for me is daytime during the week while hubby is at work.
- Where do your ideas come from?
My imagination. I can be watching something on TV or a movie or looking at something and there it comes. Or when I go online to research or read a book for research suddenly I get an idea. I see the whole story in my head, like a movie.
- Who, if anyone, has influenced your writing?
Ray Bradbury, Shirley Jackson, JRR Tolkien, Laurel K. Hamilton, Madeleine L’Engle, the Brontes, Victoria Holt, and Anne McCaffrey.
- How long have you been writing - have you always wanted to be a writer?
Ever since I was about 7-8. I have been making up and writing stories since then. It was when I was 17 and submitted three poems to a poetry magazine in Los Angeles that I got published and paid for it too.
- What is the most rewarding thing about being a writer?
Hearing from a fan that they loved or enjoyed your book. When someone tells another fan that they have to read a book of mine that also is a good feeling. Makes me feel blessed.
- Among your own books, have you a favorite book? Favorite hero or heroine?
Iridescent Invasion, because my hero is a parasitical alien, not your usual romantic hero. His kind are invading our planet, but he helps the heroine stop it, all for love. My favorite heroine is Sasha Anderson from “Being a Predator is a Bitch” in Forbidden Love: Wicked Women by Under the Moon. She is such a bad-assed werewolf, villainess, and yet, she does save her pack leader and another shifter from her pack from her human lover. And yet, at the end Sasha does something shocking that only she would do. You can purchase Iridescent Invasion at both Fictionwise and Amazon.Com. Forbidden Love: Wicked Women can be gotten at GenreConnections.com.
- Please tell us about yourself (family, hobbies, education, etc.)
Happily married for 30 years since March 12, 1977 and have a son that just turned 29. Owned by a female cat named Ripley. I have been to college twice—once in ‘70s and again for Theatre in 1999-2001. My husband and I both like to do costuming—sew/make costumes and wear them at science fiction conventions. I also like to do crafts and bake. Exercise. Loved riding horses, though haven’t since 2001. Go to museums and historical sites. Read and watch movies at theater and on DVDs. Have fave TV shows like Heroes and Lost and Blood Ties. Fan of Star Wars and Star Trek. Other SF, fantasy and horror too. Love Mexican and Oriental food (esp. sushi). Enjoy spending time with hubby and son, and also with good friends. I also am Publicity Director for a SF/fantasy/horror convention, Ravencon.
- Are there any words of encouragement for unpublished writers?
Keep on writing—every day write something, even if it’s not your story. Don’t be discourage by rejections—every writer gets those. Just keep on writing and submitting. If writing is what you want to do, then never give up.
Thank you very much for taking the time with us and answering our questions. I really appreciate this interruption to your busy schedule. Good Luck, and we will be looking forward to the next delightful creation from your talented imagination!
Yours in good reading,
Rose!
