Interview with Dorothy McFalls:

Hi Dorothy. Thank you for doing this interview. I would like to welcome you to the Romance at Heart Interview and Author Grilling session. *bg* We are interested to find out as much about you as we possibly can, so lets get started...

- Please tell us about your latest book.

My most recent release is THE HUNTRESS, a romantic suspense published by Titan Press (May 2006). Blond, beautiful bounty hunter Vega Brookes is on the hunt for her latest skip trace. Her prey, ex-special forces officer Grayson Walker, is ruthless, a killer. She shouldn't feel attracted to him. Even so, the closer she gets to finding Grayson, the louder her instincts shout that things are not what they seem.

Grayson Walker is dangerous and determined. Someone is killing those closest to him, and he's desperate to find out why. When a firecracker of a bounty hunter comes close to capturing him, he fights back and ends up shooting her. Yet not even a gunshot wound can cool the sparks that fly between them whenever they're together. Soon, his life turns into a deadly race to earn Vega's trust, track down a killer, and avoid falling in love.
" ...an action-packed adventure with sass and style. I absolutely loved it! " --Deborah Macgillivray, Author of A RESTLESS KNIGHT and Reviewer for The Best Reviews

- How do we find out about you and your books?

You can find more about me and my latest releases, contests, free short stories at www.dorothymcfalls.com

- How may readers contact you?

I love reader mail! If you want to write to me and tell me what you think about my books or ask about where the story ideas come from, please do write to me at dorothy@dorothymcfalls.com.

- Why did you decide to write romance novels?

I didn't read romance until...let's see...eight years ago now, I think. I admit it. I was a romance snob. Thought those trashy novels were beneath me. Instead, I read mysteries and suspenses and adventure stories. What I didn't realize at the time was that I really enjoyed the parts of those mysteries, suspenses, and action-adventures that had romance in them. It was by happenstance that I picked up a romance to read on a plane in a small airport gift shop. It was one of Catherine Coulter's romances. Oh my, was it a great read! I was instantly hooked. That was what I really enjoyed in those other stories, and here was a book that emphasized the relationship. I wanted more.

A year before I'd discovered romance, my interest in writing had been rekindled. I've always written stories. As soon as I learned to write, I wrote fiction. They weren't very good, but they made me happy. But when I started college, I didn't have time to write and that part of my life was put on hold until one day I was driving home from work and I remembered. I wanted to write! I started out writing mysteries. And then I discovered the romance genre. The pieces fell into place. I was going to write romance novels. And nothing else.

- Generally, how long does it take you to write a book?

It usually takes me 4 to 6 months to come up with an idea, let it mull around in my head for a while, get to know the characters, and to write about them. Sometimes the editing process stretches that timeframe out. I'm not a super-fast writer. I often wish I were, but I seem to have to stew over the story for quite a while before I can get any real work done.

- Where do your ideas come from?

Where don't they come from, might be a better question for me! I'm often inspired by friends and families and their situations. I also have had dreams of plots and characters that I will eventually write about. And from research. Sometimes I will read about a historical event or custom and my imagination just takes off from there. That is a wonderful feeling.

- What kind of research do you do?

I love to do research! I can spend hours in the library, wandering the stacks to find bits and pieces of information that may or may not work in my books. I like to talk with people about their experiences, as well. THE HUNTRESS, for example, was inspired by a run-in I had with a bounty hunter. It wasn't a pleasant experience, but I recognized it as a priceless opportunity that I wasn't going to let get by me. So, instead of getting upset, I started to ask him questions about his profession, knowing that I could use it somewhere in a story!

- Who, if anyone, has influenced your writing?

Catherine Coulter's books are what got me hooked on romance. Her books continue to inspire me. I also have a few authors such as Ernest Hemingway, Laurell K. Hamilton, Kay Hooper, and Julie Garwood, whose writing gets the words flowing in my head. Their books make me excited about the written word. They inspire me to write and to write better.

Thank you very much for taking the time with us and answering our questions. I really appreciate this interruption to your busy schedule. Good Luck, and we will be looking forward to the next delightful creation from your talented imagination!

Yours in good reading,
Rose!
