Interview with Diana Laurence:

Hi Diana. Thank you for doing this interview. I would like to welcome you to the Romance at Heart Interview and Author Grilling session. *bg* We are interested to find out as much about the great reading you offer us, and you as we possibly can, so lets get started...

- How many books have you written, how many have been published?

Iíve been freelancing for 25 years, so you donít even WANT to know how many books Iíve written! LOL But over the years I published three books and many shorter works. 2004 was the first year I started trying to sell romances and Iím amazed at how well it has gone so far. I have published Soulful Sex: Erotic Tales of Fantasy and Romance and a novel entitled Soulsí Embrace, as well as six shorter fiction pieces.

- How do we find out about you and your books?

I have two websites which will tell you all you want to know, and probably more than you want to know! :-) My romance site Diana has all the information on my works written as Diana Laurence, including excerpts and how to buy them, along with a lot about my dedication to writing ďerotica with soul.Ē You can also see me indulging my various alteregos--and wouldnít you like to lay eyes on me decked out as a Jedi or a pirate? LOL Meanwhile, I also have a site for my tiny publishing house, Living Beyond Reality Press, where I offer books written under my real name, Diane Lau. This site also includes the READ FREE Project, where readers can obtain two of my works absolutely free.

- What are the elements of a great romance for you?

To me, the most important element has always been an irresistible hero. I have to be madly in love with the guy or the book just doesnít work. Add to that a heroine who is likewise madly in love. There must be a compelling and even mystical magnetism between them. Their characters need to be rich and complex, and their relationship vivid. I especially like good dialogue between them, an interesting rapport shown via their speech. Of course there must be tension and suspense, yearning and ultimately fulfillment. When I set out to write romance with an erotic element, I knew all these factors must take precedence over the sex. They are what make the sex scenes powerful, not the other way around. I call my writing ďerotica with soulĒ because I try to be spiritual, to portray sex as an intensely beautiful and even supernatural thing which draws its power from the personality of the lovers and the bond between them.

- Do you have a favorite comment or question from a reader?

Iíve received wonderful feedback from readers and itís hard to choose, but I guess this comment on Soulful Sex from one of my dearest fans expresses well what I try to do with my work: ďMs. Lawrence manages the perilous and exciting balancing act between deep and insightful characterization and plot with great, passionate sexual writing. The reader is not embarrassed by the sex as much as inspired by it. The noble intent of the writer is subliminal yet prominent. This is not sex for it's own sake, (to rouse the dormant housewife) but sex as the highest form of art and expression.Ē Thatís really a wonderful comment that I treasure.

- What are your thoughts on love scenes in romance novels, do you find them difficult to write?

They are difficult to write in that love scenes utilize a limited number of activities, if you know what I mean. : -) In order to say something fresh and meaningful, you have to be character-centric. I mean to say, the scene is significant not because of what is going on, but because it is happening to these two unique people about whom the reader has come to care. Writing love scenes is also interesting because the author must apply a very vivid imagination in order to find and express the detail of the scene. I have to picture exactly how this caress would feel, the effect of this kiss, the response of the characters to this stimulus. It takes a lot of concentration. But obviously, itís not the most unpleasant task about the job! LOL

- Would you like to write a different genre than you do now, or sub-genre?

Actually, the nice thing about what I do is that most of it is stories or novellas, so I am writing different things all the time. I love variety and have a great time writing romances of all sorts. Iíve written a very contemporary story about an office affair, a vampire story, a mermaid story, paranormal and fantasy and science fiction. I vary my writing style also. I wrote a story with dialogue quite reminiscent of Shakespeare (although easier to understand!), one in fairy tale language, etc. But I do tend to always write romance, because the theme of bonding with another soul and finding happiness is most certainly my favorite.

- Please tell us about yourself (family, hobbies, education, etc.)

I live in a suburb of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where I was also born and raised. I received a BS in English from the University of Wisconsin--Madison. My day job is as marketing coordinator for a company that sells machine parts (and itís much more interesting and fun than that may sound!) Iím married to a wonderful man who is hilarious, reads constantly, is a runner, and operates a one-man cleaning business called Personal Slave. I have two grown daughters, one of whom is a graphic designer for an advertising agency, and the other who is about to complete her degree in Film--they are without a doubt my best girlfriends. I have dabbled in dozens of hobbies but the most significant ones are drawing and painting, cooking, mixology, music and movies. I guess the most unusual one is ecclesiastical embroidery, although running an ezine of hockey-related satire for four years comes a close second!

- What can we expect from you in the future?

My book Soulful Sex has been astoundingly successful--as of this writing it has been in the top five ebook romances on for over three months. Consequently, I felt it my bound duty--LOL--to write a sequel. Soulful Sex Volume 2 will hopefully be released early next year as an ebook, and New Age Dimensions Publishing is looking to combine the two books into a print book as well, or at least that is currently my hope. My novel Soulsí Embrace is already out in print and is starting to catch on as well, so Iím not ruling out another novel in the future. At any rate, I hope to see my approach to ďerotica with soulĒ taking the romance world by storm! Thanks for giving me the opportunity to talk about my writing with your readers, itís always a great pleasure.

Thank you again, Diana, for taking the time with us and answering our questions. I really appreciate this interruption to your busy schedule. Good Luck with Soulful Sex Volume 2. We will be looking forward to this next delightful creation from your talented pen!

Yours in good reading,
