Interview with Debbie Curwen:

Hi Debbie. Thank you for doing this interview. I would like to welcome you to the Romance at Heart Interview and Author Grilling session. *bg* We are interested to find out as much about you as we possibly can, so lets get started...

- Please tell us about your latest book.

Wherever You Are is a contemporary romance to be released by Wings ePress in January 2006. It’s the story of a woman who meets the man of her dreams, but when he drops out of her life with no warning, she’s left to wonder if he simply played her for a fool. A year later, he’s back pulling out all the stops to convince her she’s the only woman for him, but will giving him a second chance lead to her having her heart broken a second time?

- What can we expect from you in the future?

I’m currently working on two more contemporary romances. “Like A Hurricane” is sexy and lighthearted where a little white lie on the part of the heroine soon snowballs into all and out chaos with the news media and a potential new client. “Coming Home” tells the story of a couple torn apart by tragedy, but whose deep love for one another ultimately reunites them. I’m also working on my first novella involving an erotic encounter between a paralegal and the one man at her law firm with whom she would never have imagined herself. I’m having particular fun with that one!

- Do you feel humor is important in women’s fiction and why?

I love this question because laughter really is the best medicine. Anyone who can make me laugh is definitely someone I want in my life on a regular basis. I’ve always said I wish I could bottle my husband’s sense of humor because it’s quirky, spontaneous, and can sometimes only be deciphered by those who know him well. Humor is definitely a necessity for mental and emotional well-being, and I try to incorporate it into my writing as much as possible. I’m not a funny person by nature, so I have to beg, borrow, and steal funny lines I hear from family and friends. Laughter and tears go hand in hand, and together they can make a great romance even more memorable.

- Would you like to write a different genre than you do now, or sub-genre?

I love writing children’s books, especially rhyme, and I currently have a couple of picture books circulating with publishers now. I started writing rhyme in elementary school and through the years have always loved creating rhyming invitations for my kids’ birthday and/or special occasion parties. Rhyming comes very easily to me - I just wish I was an artist so I could illustrate my own stories.

- Fill in the blank favorites - Dessert, City, Season, Type of Hero, Type of Heroine.

Dessert: Anything chocolate
City: Las Vegas - I absolutely love the nightlife and the slot machines!
Season: Fall - it always gives me a sense of new beginnings and I love the changing of the leaves and cool, windy days.
Hero: My hero doesn’t have to be drop dead gorgeous (although I tend to think of Ronn Moss from the Bold and Beautiful a lot when I’m creating a new hero), but I love a man who is intelligent, sharp, sensitive, spontaneous, romantic, and comfortable in his own skin. He has to have a great sense of humor and sense of fair play, and most of all he has to make his woman know she is the most important thing in his life, the brightest part of his day, and the one he wants to hold in the middle of the night.
Heroine: I love a heroine who is funny and fiesty, intelligent, independent, and one who’s not afraid to make mistakes or laugh at herself or even make a fool of herself in the name of love. She can be a flirt and enjoy her sensuality, but she has to be true to one man.

- How long have you been writing - have you always wanted to be a writer?

I started writing short stories in elementary school and was on my high school newspaper staff where one of my favorite pieces dealt with interviewing the parents of some of my fellow students about their high school proms and how they had changed over the years. It was the one and only time my article was the front page feature of the newspaper. Always an avid reader for as long as I can remember, I started writing romance after the birth of my second child, a contemporary romance called “Second Chances.” That was 22 years ago and “Second Chances” is now “Wherever You Are” to be published by Wings ePress in January 2006!!! For obvious reasons, that book will always have a special place in my heart.

- Have you experienced writer’s block - If so, how did you work through it?

This question feels like it was written especially for me because I have writer’s block quite often. I love to write and I get excited about writing certain scenes, but if my mindset is not there, I’m more apt to play a few games of “Collapse” until my imagination opens up again. A quick cure is when my husband or one of my kids pops their head inside the door with a “I thought you were supposed to be writing?” That usually works well to get me back on track.

- Any words of encouragement for unpublished writers?

Never give up! Seeing as it took me well over 20 years to get “Wherever You Are” published, I’d have to simply say perseverance and always believing in yourself will ultimately help you realize your dreams.

Thank you very much, for taking the time with us and answering our questions. I really appreciate this interruption to busy schedule. Good Luck, and we will be looking forward to the next delightful creation from your talented imagination!

Yours in good reading,
Rose!
