Interview with Arianna Hart:
We want to welcome Arianna Hart to Romance at Heart, and let you know a bit about her and her books. Arianna Hart spends much of her non-writing time chasing after her three daughters, ages 6, 4 and 2. She also teaches high school part-time, teaches kickboxing part-time, and is a Black Belt in Karate. Before her children came along, Arianna worked on a fire department as an Emergency Dispatcher as well as an EMT/Firefighter. She has Bachelor and Masters degrees in English Education and Special Education.
She enjoys reading romance and erotica in all genres as well as mysteries and science fiction. If she had her choice, she would be on a beach with a drink in one hand and a book in the other. Until she wins the lottery though, she’ll settle for sitting by pool and chasing her girls.
Arianna, we appreciate you taking this time for us. Lets get started!
- How may readers contact you?
I love to hear from my readers! They can contact me by email at ari@ariannahart.com or they can go to my website, http://www.ariannahart.com and sign up for my newsletter. I also have a Yahoo group readers can join, Friends of Ari so there are many ways people can get in touch with me! I really enjoy hearing what people think, both the good and the bad.
- How much of your personality and life experiences are in your writing?
Lots of it! I am a Black Belt in Karate, so many of my characters have martial arts training. I’m also somewhat sarcastic, so they tend to be as well. I try to include emotional experiences I’ve had so that the reader can really feel part of the book. I even included part of my husband’s marriage proposal to me in SURPRISE!
- What about your family, do they know not to bother you when you are writing - or are there constant interruptions?
I have three daughters, ages 6, 4, and 2, and the interruptions are most definitely constant. I try to get a good chunk of my writing done when the baby is sleeping and my oldest is still in school. I don’t get a whole lot done when they are all home.
- Do you feel humour is important in women's fiction and why?
Absolutely!! I love to read books with humor and I always try to put some lighter moments in my own books, with varying degrees of success. There is so much sadness in the world as it is, we all need a chance to escape and laugh, if only for an hour or so. If I want to cry I can read the paper, give me a good book any day of the week!
- What are your thoughts on love scenes in romance novels, do you find them difficult to write?
I love to write love scenes, of course I love to read them too, so that helps. I enjoy seeing the emotional as well as the physical attachment between the two characters carried out. I really get caught up in writing them, a fact my husband appreciates too.
- How long have you been writing - have you always wanted to be a writer?
I have been writing seriously for a year and a half. I think I have been making up stories (and not finishing them) since I was able to hold a pen. I actually finished and submitted SURPRISE in October of 2002, and it was rejected. I then went back and honed my craft (or tried) and worked on some other genres, and sold STRANDED in August of 2003. SURPRISE was reworked and sold in October of 2003. I think if I didn’t write I’d end up walking around and talking to myself. . .
- How many books have you written, how many have been published?
I have written eight full length books, and seven of them have been, or are in the process of being published. The one that hasn’t been I need to go back and do some serious overhaul on it and I just haven’t had the time, but I will some day!
- If you weren't writing, what would you be doing?
I’m lucky enough to do both occupations I’ve always dreamed off. I teach part time and write part time. Add to that being a full time mom and I don’t have any time to be doing anything else, hahaha.
- Any words of encouragement for unpublished writers?
Yes, develop a thick skin, and be stubborn in the face of refusal. Oh yeah, and never, ever think the learning is over. You can always find something else that needs a little work, never be satisfied with what you’ve done, or you’ll never get better!
- Thanks for taking this time to talk to us, Arianna. We shall be watching for more good reading from you and hope you will keep us informed. We will be glad to pass the information along to our readers. Thanks again.
Yours in good reading,
Rose!
