Meet:
Kate Hofman |
I was born in Breda, Netherlands (quite some time ago, but I’m keeping the actual date a dead secret!), and went to school in Amsterdam, then to the U. where I studied Fine Art. I was not talented enough to be enrolled in their painters’ classes, so I took Art History as my major, and Interior Design as my minor. When my family moved to England, I was 18, a difficult age to switch universities, so I stayed where I was, seeing my family only for Christmas, Easter, and the long holidays. When I applied for the position of Curator, with my newly minted B.F.A, I was told that I could be the secretary of the man whom they would appoint as Curator. I told them that they would have to pay ME for my expertise, not some man, while I did the work. They were surprised at my attitude…. Oh my, I hadn’t even begun! Disappointed with the opportunities given to women in my field, I decided to move to Canada. A few years later, I met and later married Arnold, a truly fabulous man, who encouraged me to start my own art gallery, rather than work for peanuts for other people. Great idea! I am not much good at names, and didn’t want to use my own name. If, sometime later, I decided to sell the gallery, I didn’t want someone else using my name. So I called the gallery by the street number – Gallery 1667. Lots of people thought it had been there 300 years… I ask you… And then, my son gave me a computer for my birthday, and after a while I found myself emailing with a writer whose work I admire hugely – Nina Bruhns. She asked me if I would do internet publicity for her – writers get so many demands on their time, which a depressing number of people don’t seem to realize they need for writing. Ah, well. I worked for Nina for a number of years. One day, she said, “You should write, you know. You’re a born storyteller.” Who, ME? But one day I did as Nina told me. I still remember sitting in front of the blank screen on Word, and then I slowly typed ‘Will and Kiki’ and began a semi-autobiographical story about my early twenties. Before I was finished, another story was clamouring to be written, and so it went. For five years, I wrote and wrote—a total of 25 books, average length 50-60thousand words, although there were two at 150thousand, and one at 250thousand… Rose Brungard became my mentor, and when she heard about the 250thousand word book, she began to plan to cut the text into three segments, and actually publish ADAM & MIMI. And maybe, one day, you will see it advertised as my next trio of books… Don’t hold your breath, though—I have a LOT of work to do on it. You can see the books that have been published for me on my website, www.katehofman.com Come and visit some time! Sincerely, Kate More about Kate Hofman...
