Clay Renick |
I grew up in Georgia but went to Oregon in the Coast Guard. That setting is the backdrop for several novels. It's hard to go there and not be affected by the power of the ocean or the beauty of the mountains. Those two come together at the coast and can leave you with a sense of wonder. I ended up California Baptist University as an English major and took a job out of college as a feature writer. The assignment was a year on the road all over America, into Canada, Puerto Rico and even Hawaii. The goal was feature stories about volunteer missionaries. One was in a small gambling town named Jack Pot, Nevada. There I met a beautiful young lady from Georgia who worked at a church day care as a missionary. It was a difficult story to write. I found myself attracted and yet had to remain professional. We continued to talk after I left. I flew down for visits throughout the year, and she later ended up in Espanola, New Mexico. We'd sit and look out at the mountains and wonder where life would take us. My year on the road was about to close. We both had dreams. And our lives started to mesh in ways that sounded like a romance novel. We got married in Santa Fe on a quiet afternoon in the spring. That was 20 years ago. We now live in Statesboro, Georgia. I'm still writing. She's still that beautiful lady with an interesting story. We have a son now and he recently left for college. My goal as a writer is to bring hope to you, the readers. Life has so many interesting turns that come to us as problems. There are answers. There is hope. Put them together and you get the unexpected. That's the romance.
